FYI, I have deleted the Embedded pdf file on my site and left the link to the pdf file. Some users are still having problems with the embedded version so it is gone.

No. I usually had a camera of some sort with me everyday at UT but I didn't get any shots of Friedlander. I would have remembered that - even with my memory slip sliding away. A shot of Winogrand and Friedlander would have been a nice capture.

RF forum readers,
I was told that Jim Arnold has the Garry Winogrand interview with Bill Moyers on several digital formats. Click on Jim Arnold's page to access the interview in multiple formats.

Thank-you for the excellent article. It was most enjoyable.
Here's a photo from the Freidlander exhibit in Paris at the Jeu de Pomme.

sirius,
Interesting.
Those pictures on the yellow wall cannot be Friendlander's, right? Who shot those?

I enjoyed reading about your experience studying under Garry Winogrand. He's probably my favorite photographer. I read Szarkowski's, Figments From the Real World awhile back. It's funny that you posted this because I have been wondering as of late, why no one has written a biography on Garry. I think a bio. would be a facinating read. Last year I read a biography by Richard Whelan on Alfred Steiglitz which was quite good. The photos you included were great. His expressions showing his love for the art of photography. The video, I have seen before, but well worth seeing again and again.
Thanks

Pesphoto,
Thanks, WOW. Well imagine that. I did not know Friedlander's history with recording artists photography. He sure didn't mention it the one time he sat in with Winogrand.
I was looking through the classic "The Photographer's Eye" just yesterday and I think Friedlander had three shots in it, all his street work. I have always found Friedlander's "street" work mysterious and provacative. I usually sensed there was something about his images I never quite understood.

GB,
Thanks for the compliment. I thought someone HAD written a biography on Garry Winogrand in the late 90s or so (but i could be wrong). I hadn't thought about GW at all until I stumbled across that video interview quite by accident. Anyway, I thought I read years ago that someone had written a bio about it. Hmmm, let me do some research on that

I just googled and there is a biography on Winogrand, 'The Man in the Crowd: The Uneasy Streets of Garry Winogrand' by Ben Lifson. I could not find a publication date but probably late 90s if I remember correctly. I doubt it is still in print.
I need to get a copy and read it!

Amazon has 11 of these books listed from $288.88 and up. Winogrand is one of the coauthers I noticed. I'm not sure if this is a biography, but a facinating read no doubt. But at $288.88 I don't think i'll be comming across a copy any time soon. Maybe a good rff member has a copy and can give us more detail on the book.

If you do you are very lucky. Go to Amazon.com and type in the book. It's more expensive than Robert Franks book the Americans which I was shocked to see.

A good place to try and find the book might be a used book store. In Texas we have the Half-priced Books" chain where you can find such treasures for next to nothing. Unfortunately, you have to do a lot of searching to find them. Many photo books (both books ABOUT photographers and photographic books too) can be had there for cheap.
