Canon LTM Gas....again!!

Two days ago, on a shopping trip to London, I got home late at night,-the tired, but happy new owner of a nice Canon 7, smooth, uncrumpled shutter blinds, working meter, and a huge 50mm, f1.2 lens affixed!. 😀 It's going to be a few days before I can try out this new toy, so opinions on this lens,-which some reports say, is not one of Canons best, would be appreciated, and some pictures,-especially wide aperture examples, would maybe wet my appetite!! 🙂 First impressions are of a beutifully engineered, and well specified, - though heavy! camera, the quallity reminds me of the Nikormats that have served me for over thirty years,-and I think this one will be a 'keeper' too!!.

the lens is very good but they sometimes have a slight haze that degrades the sharpness some.
the good news is they are easy to take apart and clean.

Congrats! That Canon 7 is a nice camera, very robust, excellent viewfinder. Yes it's on the heavy side, but not THAT much larger or heavier than the P.

Thanks, guys, the elements look absolutely pristine-and the unusual diaphragm design intrigues me!. BTW-I'll probably be asking Santa to help with a telephoto (in the order of 80 to 100mm) - so advise on which one he should look out for, would be helpfull!

hard to beat a canon 85/2 lens, sharp but large and heavy.
for size, the 100/4 is tiny but not as sharp as the 85.
there is also a 100/2 that i have never used, but expensive.

The Canon 100/3.5 gets praise from owners. The Nikkor-P 8.5cm/2.0 is nice. In LTM of course. If you like Sonnars. It balances nicely on the M5. The Canon 7 should be about the same.

You've probably already noticed, but if not, be careful of filters and the front element. The glass protrudes and some normal filters will collide with the optical element.

Dave -- Wayne graciously referred you to my shots w/ a recent ebay acquisition. I have great hopes for this lens, and was surprised at the results (given the stuff -- fungus? -- on the internal element). If you have not already done so, check out Dante Stella's website, and his article on "canon lenses for leica," which reviews this lens. My version is a fairly early black and chrome; there is also a later all-black version which uses the hard-to-find 40 mm filters. The lens has been uniformly praised on the web, but seems to get little attention these days. Prices for a decent 100/3.5, lens only, are running between $150 and $200 (KEH recently had one rated Ex for $199 -- it's now gone). Apart from sharpness, the lens is tiny, which is a major reason it appealed to me.

If you're not wedded to Canon lenses, a 90 mm Elmar would also be a good choice. The 100 mm framelines in the 7 will work just fine, and that lens is pretty compact too. I've been borrowing an uncoated version (circa 1936) and have been very impressed w/ the results. Good luck!

Congrats on a wonderful camera. Keep an eye out for external finder that have the specail ball in the bottom that allows the 7 to adjust for parallax as you focus. At least I thought the 7 had that feature. I was looking for 135 and 85 bright line finders a few years back and that seemed to be all that was available then, finders for the 7. They do not have any external dials for manual adjustment.

The Canon V and VI series (with the exception of the P) had the ball detent parallax feature, but the 7 series does not.

If you dont mind a 135 there is one that is like new in the classifieds for $109 with all the goodies. I was thinking about getting it but dont think I would use that length on my RF, I barely use the 90/4 Elmar I have.

Could'nt wait any longer to try this new toy!-so shot a few on my way to the local watering hole!,(pictured)-most had severe vignetting,-due to an over ambitious shade that I hastily fitted! 🙁 ...but everything seems ok!
