Gettin a Mac

It will void the standard one-year warranty if you do it yourself. You can usually buy standard RAM and pay an authorized Apple shop to install it for less than the extra RAM costs pre-installed.

Personally, I've never worried much about those warranties.

1. Do a good job of installing the RAM and they are unlikely to notice, unless they have added software that tracks RAM installs and they ask you to produce a receipt for the work. That seems far-fetched, but not impossible I'm sure.

2. Not a whole lot is covered by the warranty that's likely to affect a non-first-generation machine.

Hi,
The warranty is covered unless you do something that breaks the machine, especially with RAM and HD upgrades. Pulling out the logic board, etc. gets you into the grey area, since there is kapok tape on some things for insulation. I talked with an Apple person about this before pulling my HD when I was in Minneapolis. My MacBook Pro had a logic board problem and was not staying on for more than a few minutes. Since I could not get my data from experiments I was running off the machine, I had to crack it open and pull the HD. I called Apple first and they said no problem since I told them why and that I had the tools and experience to do it.

Ywenz, if you don't wear synthetics and ground yourself before opening on something metal, I'd recommend adding your own RAM. I have had nothing but good experiences with OWC. I talked with the owner at last years Macworld and he's a stand up dude. If you are comfortable with small screws, replacing the HD is also easy. Here's a link to a site with all the info you need- ifixit

Edit: Oops, I didn't see Michael's links above

You can add your own RAM without voiding the warranty. They will just remove it if you send it in for service and tell you that the same problem won't be supported if it is re-installed. As I said in another similar thread...buy the minimum RAM config on a single DIMM, even downgrade it to 512MB. Remove this DIMM when you receive the machine and store it properly. Place your own RAM in the machine (I use Memory To Go as they have a fair price on the same Samsung DIMM that Apple supplies) and off you go. If you need to send the machine in for service you can replace the original DIMM before you send it off. I often try to reproduce the problem with the factory DIMM myself to see if it is a memory error.

The HDD can be replaced perhaps without voiding the warranty by going through the "Genius Bar" at your local Apple Store.

It's pretty cool, as an apple PDA... as a phone, not really, as an Ipod, kinda. Too expensive for me though.
It's nothing that doesn't exist already.

... including the name.

I think it will have its issues and there's not a chance I'm buying one (because I hate telephones, mostly ;)), but you can't really mean this. There are other devices that include the same basic functions, but at the prosaic level there's nothing in its class with the same sort of user input methodology, video quality (by which I mean not just playing videos but things like the on-the-fly rotation and other "interactive" interface cues), or interface responsiveness.

In a larger sense, there's nothing with a remotely similar interface, such as the contextual integration (ie, the "buttons" that appear for creating conference calls, for contact and mapping functions, etc, based on what you're doing).

I"m guessing the Cingular plan for the iphone will probably fetch quiet a few pennies each month. However that being said, the iphone represents a look into the future where a portable in-your-hand device can connect you to the rest of the world.. give it a few years and high speed internet + phone will be common place.

It already is in Japan as far as I know, the US is behind because we waste too much money buying $20,000 shoelaces for the army or something and blowing up camels... but that's OT, so nevermind.

It's already in Japan because stuff like that is much eaiser to implement in a small country. Imagine how much coverage a cell provider would need to provide to build up enough interest for the US consumer?

But then again.. we've got all those damn luddites here.....

The legend says, IT people are anti-mac because if everyubody would use Mac, there would be less problems. And they wopuld lose their job.

However. My MacBook, 4 months old, had the power-off syndrome. They repaired it, yes... But it was not perfect.

To your point Pherdinand, my brand new M6TTL showed up with the rangefinder vertical out of whack. So off to Leica it went before I even "booted it up". It's been fine ever since, though.

I have a 12inch powerbook that I am typing on as we speak! My desktop is a PC that is dying a slow and agonizing death. Once it finishes itself off, I will be buying a mac. At the moment I think the 24inch iMac is how I am going to go!

aaah, how I loved it... then I had to give it to my sister and I've bought a 13" Macbook... seems to go from a M3 to a Canon EOS... :(

That 24 " iMac is stunning! It even has decent graphics acceleration so games are not at all out of the question.
