getting an M6

Yes, I'm getting an M6. It's a late production camera made in 1997. It's been used so it's not pristine, probably 7 or 8/10, marks some down to the zinc through the black chrome.

I had to give up a bit to get it. The Rolleiflex with accessories, a Canon 50mm f1.8, and a Canon 35mm f2.8. I'll be looking to replace the 35 soon. I didn't want to let it go but it was needed to make the deal go.

The M6 owner in the US, was told at his post office that a parcel tracking number would not extend beyond the US border. I received a camera from Japan recently (thanks Mike!) and could check on that parcel leaving Japan and entering Canada, customs, regional post office, and local post office. Is he getting accurate info?

Hi Terence. No I don't think so. This one hasn't been adverised. The owner is advertising his 50 Summicron that he had on the body on Pnet right now though.

I believe so, Frank. I'm not a USPS shipping expert though and if you visit the USPS web site under Tracking they have content about the services they provide with a link to the tracking page, not details about tracking itself.

This was an interest of mine this week as I was trying to determine when a camera body sent by a combination of DHL/Australian Post Office might arrive at my house so I could be there to sign for it. Couldn't find out and of course missed the delivery. 🙁 Tracking is not a particularly strong feature of the USPS...

Congrats on the purchase Frank. I had a slight problem with the M6 I mentioned and had to return it. Glad to hear it's not the same one, you never know in this small community of ours.

As for your question, certain delivery methods do come with tracking information. EMS mail available through the USPS will provide global tracking. If he sent it using other methods (Global priority etc...), tracking may not be available. Best would have been to use UPS or FedEx if tracking is an important feature for you.

Oops, forgot to say congrats Frank! You're getting more "modern", huh? In a while we'll move you on to a TTL then after a while an M7... 😉 😀

Congrats Frank. I think that would be correct in that you loose tracking once it crosses the border with USPS. The same was true for me sending an item for repair south of the border with Canada Post, no tracking after border crossing. Hope it all works out.

Hey, congrats. I believe the no tracking thing is accurate for all USPS shipping except for Express Priority, which would cost an arm and a leg.

He is correct about the tracking: the number shows the item as being at the last place in the US system. I sent a camera to Oscar and thought it was stuck in the Virgin Islands until Oscar told me he received it. Send it insured. If it is lost, you will get the money back. And their is no better incentive for the Post Office to locate it fast than to have to pay up for it. I had an item "lost" to tracking, but had it returned quickly once a claim was made. It was the fault of the recipient, and he paid me the incurred cost to resend it.

Joe, the fellow I'm trading with has a Canon P with a 100mm lens and he really wanted the 35 and 50 to complete his set. You know how Canon P owners can be!

My XA came USP Global Express and it was fully trackable: the morning I received it, I had checked the USPS site and seen it had been released from Customs a couple of days earlier.
