Since the new release, I've had the M9 itch again. I'll need to sell two bodies and two lenses to finance.

Mamiya 7II
Mamiya 50mm
Mamiya 80mm
Leica M8.2

You think that should cover it?

Anyone care to toss a cold glass of water in my face?

SPLASH!!

You really want to sell the ultimate image quality film rangefinder for a DIGITAL (which you already have)?

I'll take the 50mm off your hands....

You need to revive the economy: give me the money and I'll buy it. That way you don't get to make an expensive purchase, and were not talked out of it

If you want it, can afford it, get it, you only live once, and if you didn't like it for whatever reason, you could sell at only a small loss.

As a film evangelist let me say.... If you have the means, do it. I would in a second.

The price new is 5500 EUR. The used ones I see are quite new and around 4800 EUR. Is this a small loss?

Sorry, I'm not the one to talk you out of it. I got an M9 last year, and there's been no looking back.

I bought mine as a 1 year old demo camera, with 1 year warranty and saved a pile of money.

What do you need that the M9 offers that you don't already have. Is it just a desire or a need that will help you accomplish something tangible?

If you are in the business of buying cameras that cost 5500 euros, yes, it's probably a small loss.:) If 700 euros is a large amount of money to you, then an M9 may not be a good idea.

Why not get a rental for a week or something, and see how you go? For me, it's too much money, better spent on travel, and I'd be worried about it the whole time.

Think of red edge, Italian flag, and outrageous future repair costs out of warrantee with no place to turn but Leica. It is not the same quiet small M size camera you are used to holding. They took out the chrome plate and added some cheap paint
that wears within weeks. Kodaks new films work exceeding well in a scanner.

These stop me, but the idea is tempting because I loved film and Leica. Color me Nikon now. My Leicas are for film.

If you want a small digital camera Leica size, Nikon D7000 is seriously good. At iso 100 it is as good as my 12MP full frame D3. The 35 1.8 performance peaks around 2.8 or 4.0. This combo will set you back $1500. Then there is the Fuji X100 if you can put up with a fixed lens.

Yes, but how are you going to photograph your travels? A week ago I came back from a 3850 mile round trip motorcycle tour to Paarnu in Estonia. I carried the M9 as a main camera and the M8 as a backup (never needed). In Magdeburg I shot well over 100 pics of the university sports club evening, which would have put a big dent in film stocks, but was less than one 4GB card. My wife actually did run out of film (Delta 3200 and HP5 Plus in Bessa-R2 with M2 as backup, again, backup never needed).

Cheers,

R.

I'll be using my Leica M3 and new Bessa R4A on my next trip. I'll have a Lumix G1 as digital backup if I do run out of film, or some other mishap befalls me.

I'm just saying that for me, a £5000 camera would put me off taking it places I'd take a cheaper camera, and that is the same for film cameras too.

I'd rather have a cheap camera and an expensive holiday, than vice-versa, but that's just me.

To questions like yours I would usually reply, yes get the M9 if you can afford it. I sold of a lot of my kit to finance it and also smashed my piggy bank, but am very happy with the M9. First time in my life that I think I am set in respect of camera gear, GAS free for the last 7 months. On the other hand I am not so sure whether I would have sold a Mamiya 7II with 50 and 80mm lenses, that is a very nice camera. I would only sell it if I rarely ever used it.

I prefer having both..:p
