Dave,I have no wish to be inflammatory, we all have different tastes and preferences - but looking through this and similar threads I am struck by the softness and general 'lack-lustre' appearance of images from the J8 - especially at wide aperture. I have a nice copy J8 (1959) that has produced some very satisfactory images - usually at f5.6/f8 or smaller, but right now I'm a bit disillusioned with it, after a long period of using some of my other lenses, and this is probably 'clouding my judgement' a little.
Dave.
I've used two J-8's in Contax mount fairly extensively. One was a real dog with soft images and flat colors, the other close in performance to my Zeiss 50/1.5 Sonnar - maybe better! Obviously QC was an issue in the production of these lenses, but at least they were cheap.

Magg, you sure do have that J-8 matched perfectly with your Leica.

I really lucked out- I just screwed it into a CV LTM-to-M adapter and it was good to go!
Dad would like to go through mistresses like Picasso, but he'll have to settle for looking like him...I hope!

A lot of excellent images here, but I particularly like yours, Rob. And they certainly show that the FSUs can be as good as any lenses when it comes to contrast and color-rendering.![]()

Two images.... plus one of the camera/lens. No complaints from me on a camera assembled in Kiev Arsenal in the 50's, along with the lens, I suspect.

Every so often, I idly think about getting some "better" lenses. And then realize that 1) I generally like how my photos look (as long as I've done my part) and 2) That I'm starting to know what to expect with these lenses since I've been using them for a few years now, and 3) possibly giving up #s 1 and 2 for significantly more expensive lenses doesn't seem like a good trade to me.
