Give Your Surplus Camera To A Student

I did this about two or more years ago...I loaned out a camera to a friend's daughter for a class she was taking...He had asked where he could buy a camera for her that would meet the class requirements, I opted to loan one I wasn't using...
I got it back two years later, in just as good shape as I lent it...I never missed it and was happier knowing it was being used rather than just sitting in my closet...
I would do it again as long as I know who's using it...the camera was my Pentax MX (black body w/winder) and a 50mm 1.7 lens...and I am the original owner of this one...

Al, I'm going to have a Vivitar ready soon. It's a screw mount camera with a meter. Good condition. It's been cleaned and re-foamed. I was going to sell it, but this sounds like a worthy cause.

In the past six or seven years, I've given away maybe 20 or 30 cameras. Each has been cleaned and restored.

I have done this a few times and probably will again. I usually ask for an 8x10 as "payment" so I guess it isn't really a gift. Hasn't happened the last couple of times, though.
Next time, I won't lay such a burden on the recipient.

Al, don't regret starting this tread, its a very meaningful topic.

I have done this, both to schools and individuals, the last few years I have supplied cameras to "friends" I have gotten to know through the internet. They have gone to areas of the world with poor access to even new cameras, and both individuals have returned piles of socially, politically and otherwise interesting images.

Supporting somebody in the process of photographing is well worth it.

For me the biggest thing is keeping focus on why and that once something is given it is - as previously stated - no longer mine.
