Goin' to New York...

Personally, I would avoid anything that entails standing in line for hours with hordes of "I Love NY" t-shirt wearing clowns. That includes the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Empire State Building, etc.

I'm a life long NYer and never bothered with that nonsense.

And stay out of chain restaurants. Don't come to one of the best food cities on earth and eat at "Red Lobster" or "Olive Garden" or "McDonald's". At least try something that's not sold in suburban strip malls.

The view from Top of Rock above Rockefeller Center is remarkable and worth the visit.
I am a long-time NYC resident as well and the city from above never ceases to amaze me.
Top of the Rock beats the Empire State building because it is farther north on the island and has a better view of Central Park.
The trees are just starting to change here and you will see hints of color as you look up the Hudson.

Statue of liberty and Ellis island are closed b/c of the government shutdown. I feel the empire state building is a waste of time. The Rock is a better place for a good view. Also Boris is right. There are A LOT of fantastic places to eat at any budget here.

For a free, low key event check out the street fairs during the fall. Might even find something interesting to photograph. I believe you can hit 3 during that week, although they tend to be pretty much the same. Just do a yahoo or google search...

Not an event, but if you like to walk and the weather's nice, the Jay St. Metro Tech subway station is close to the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge. Walking across into lower Manhattan is a real treat. And the views, well, they're kind of stunning.

The A, C and F trains all stop there should you want to check it out.
How far across is it?

Perfect! That sounds great. That goes right on the list. Thanks!

We're looking forward to trashing our diets!

Perfect. thanks. Sounds like October is just the right time to be there. My wife's never been, and my last visit was in 1971, so it'll all be new to us both. Thanks so much to everyone for all your help.

In addition to the tips mentioned for Manhattan, I would also recommend a day exploring Brooklyn, which in some ways is the new "Manhattan." Neighbourhoods like Brooklyn Heights, Greenpoint, Park Slope, Williamsburg, and Bushwick all have great architecture and vibrant streets. Can't miss Coney Island or Brighton Beach, either.

Actually, I used to have an office near the top of the Empire State Building and I used to take photos out all the windows constantly.

But I never actually went to the roof.

I don't know how much you like museums, but the MET and the cloisters (part of the met but in Washington heights) is brilliant. Well worth the visit. The other museums are a bit of a let off for me (i'am not a fan of modern art) so can't really comment. As far as street photography goes Chinatown has NEVER dissapointed. If you doubt that statement just ask jsrockit (john):D
