Going in reverse

Ever since I received my Carl Zeiss 50/2 ZM in May 2006 I've enjoyed shooting it. Colours are rendered beautifully on my R-D1, the photos are crisp, and the lens a wonderful piece of engineering.

But last weekend I was running through some old photos and took a closer look at shots taken in my pre-CZ period. I was shooting a Jupiter 8 extensively back then. My reviews opened my eyes (again) to how beautiful my photos taken with the J8 actually are. The colours are beautiful too. The photos, however, have something to them that the CZ photos don't have: a certain smoothness, where the CZ have crispness.

I've put the J8 back on the R-D1. Not out of nostalgia but because I (now) seem to prefer the photos taken by it over those from the CZ.

This is probably the first time that I'm stepping "back". Before it was always stepping up from one lens to a new one. Now I'm returning to a lens I've had though not used for years.
