Over the years I've put on a lot
they add up, and you don't notice it until it's too late

Impulsivity, lack of will power.

I'm bursting at the seams, things don't fit anymore

so after Thanksgiving, I'm going to slim down

If you haven't guessed yet - it's not weight we are talking about, but photo
equipment.
Time to make some hard choices

I have 23 lenses (+ 1 on order) 10 bodies + 2 fixed lens cameras

the hard question is what to sell. It's all good stuff, just way under-used

there is some easy stuff - I have 2 of one kind of lens (8.5cm) , and 3 of another, fairly close (5cm), another one a nice macro that I never use.
I have a nice wide angle zoom that I'm conflicted about, worth a lot but mostly not my shooting style/predeliction

some stuff I paid too much for, selling it would be taking a loss , some stuff has sentimental value (I'm the original owner).

How would you all approach this ?

This should not to be construed as an advertisement and I've redacted the identity of the various pieces 🙂
I will put details in a post to classifieds this week.

Repeat daily, "I am a gear-aholic"

That's step one. You have choices.

You could remove all the batteries, pack each item in a plastic bag with a silica gel packet, and put it all in storage. The dilemma for me is that a lot of stuff I might sell is basically worthless, so I've turned to buying instead. Good luck in your quest.

I have lots of cameras and lenses but most of them are in the $5~10 range. From a 99 cent plastic 35mm camera to a Zeiss Box Tengor that was so pretty that I forked over $20 for it. Usually though old 6X9 box cameras don't add up fast in dollar value.

I do have perhaps $2K in total resale value in the more valuable film stuff but no more than that.

Half the reason I tag my photos on flickr with the gear used to take the shot is to make it simpler to acknowledge what I'm not using and sell it.

I was hoping to see trends in my favorite photos and what I used to take then but I'm all over the board there. So far the only noticable pattern is that a disproportionate number of favorites were taken with my Rolleiflex.

My biggest headache is M/LTM 50s. I have an obscene number of them. But for regular users I have a Planar, Yashinon 5cm 1.8, Nikkor 5cm 1.4, Hexanon 2.4, Canon 50mm 1.4, etc. Beyond that, I have a sentimental favorites (a clean Summar for example) as well as a dedicated low light lens (CV 1.1). I have a trip to LA coming up in a few weeks and struggle with knowing what to bring as I'll probably be shooting around dusk and into the evening quite a bit but generally don't like carrying around the 1.1 all the time due to the size. So then its either the CV 1.1 + something slower or a faster 1.5 (which leaves the Nikkor and Canon - and I haven't made a call on which of them I want to keep yet as I'm determined to cut down there). Part of me wants to ditch them both and pick up the VC 1.5. 😉

I'm really hoping that by this time next year I've figured out what I enjoy using and have less gear in general.
