Going to New York for the first time

Any suggestions? Be they cool places to take photos, vintage / classic camera stores, junk shops, must-eat bagel places or just the best all-night diner, anything goes.

I haven't been to the US since I was about twelve years old, and have never been to NYC before. My girlfriend and I have got my friend's apartment for the entire week so we have a nice place to stay.

I should add we'll be there in autumn - end of September to be precise, followed by a few days in Memphis too.

Any help is much appreciated - I have a total noob when it comes to everything and anything in the States!

There are a couple good vantage points for cityscape shots. One of my faves was the Esplanade (promenade) in Brooklyn Heights. Excellent views of lower Manhattan.

You can also get some good shots of part of the east side from the Pulaski Bridge, on the Brooklyn-Queens border.

The Smith-9th elevated station on the F line has good views, but there may be some construction going on there. (?????)

Of course you need to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. 🙂

For up high shots, I used to prefer the top of the former RCA Building at Rockefeller Center. When I was in my teens you just took the elevator up and walked out, but now there's an admission charge.

I agree....just have the camera in your hands and you will find something that interests your eye.

Be friendly and polite....talk to the average New Yorkers, you will be surprised how friendly they will be in return. I always find people watching and interaction with the other folks in NY the best part of my visits there.
