This is my grandpa, John Westerfield, fishing on the pier at his lake cottage. He was fishing with an old 1960s-era Mitchell 300 spinning reel on an equally old fiberglass rod. I shot this in 1994, the year I graduated from high school.

We used to spend every summer fishing at the lake. He taught me to fly fish and to tie flies. I still have the aluminum jonboat we used. He gave it to me before he died in 1999. I haven't gone fishing since then. Grandma was mad at him for buying the lake house after he retired, and she sold it the split second he was dead. That was the year I graduated from college and life became hard because I wasn't able to find a job, and I struggled for many years to make a living from photography. I didn't have time to go fishing. Now that I'm sort of retired myself now, I am thinking of getting out my fly rods and going fishing again.
