Good budget alternatives to tri-x and HP5+

it is true that kentmere and rollei rpx 400 are the same film?
There are dabates ongoing about this. Some say yes because they saw no difference, others say no because they saw a significant difference and even others say the film was different but is the same today. And then there's the statement from Harman (Ilford photo brand) that they will not supply their branded products (including Kentmere) for house brand products.
Take your choice.

Foma 200 is good stuff if you don't mind slow (true ISO in most devs identical to FP4) and grainy. Lovely tonality!

I do not however know of any ISO 400 films that are anything like as good as either HP5 or Tri-X, at any price.

Cheers,

R.

I've done Kentmere 400 (and 100 too, but that's off-topic) in Xtol. As a sidenote, the film is just one part of a whole system (exposure, developing, wet prints, scanning) and in order to get good results I have found it worthwhile to stick with as few variables as possible and then go from there. You can get excellent results from any fresh film today, provided you put in the effort.

Oh man…. When did HP5 become so expensive ?!?
The last time I bought some was during the 2 pack deal in 2012.
It was under $2.50 per roll with that deal. I'm down to about 30 rolls!
Just checked at Freestyle and it's nearly doubled in price!
Just goes to show, if you shoot… no matter how full the freezer...it's never enough 😛

I've been testing AEU 100… It's not much better than old Fuji SS 100 imo.
Easy enough to get ok results but not stellar sharpness. Have not wet printed anything yet.

Adorama and B&H both have 100ft HP5 bulk film for around $55. That is $3 per 36exp roll. The only time I got HP5 under $2.50 per roll was some HP5 bulk film on ebay. But that was hard to find.

I bought a bulk roll of Kentmere 400 for fun and like it. I mainly shoot Tri-X but Kentmere isn't too far off imho. I develop both in HC110.

Kentmere is quite grainy but I don't think much grainier than Tri-X. I should say that my developing skills could be improved but hopefully the below gives an indication.

For a better view of the film, a copy of the unprocessed TIFF is in my public Dropbox folder. There's also a large version of the processed image.

A 30m bulk roll costs 41€ at Maco in Germany (General Photographic has the same price; a few months ago it was 38€ for a roll...) and I got 18 or 19 rolls from it. That said, Tri-X can be had in Europe for 3.65€ at General Photo which is pretty good methinks.

I'm from Spain and I think that you can find the best prices (considering that you have to add shipping charges) in these places:

http://www.macodirect.de (there you can find kentmere 400, for example, and prices per roll get reasonable if you order a big amount of them)

http://www.foto-r3.com and http://www.tiendasalesdeplata.com In these two you can find Protopan 400 (some say it's a very nice film, i haven't tried it yet, but i would definetly do it son). I don't know which of these two would make a cheaper shipping.

Hope this helps you,
Andrés

I want to try Foma, here in the States it's under the Arista EDU label as well as Fomapan. Someone please correct me, but I believe the film is Fomapan.

Just to be clear.
Arista Premimum = Tri-X
Arista EDU = Fomapan?

Trying other films can be sometimes rewarding but I, for one, keep coming back to Tri-X, as much as I try to like other emulsions. The best alternative I found was Fuji Neopan, but then they discontinued it ! Back to Tri-X I came, but It just does what I need and want from a film. Better in my opinion to choose a film for its characteristics than its price.....

I don't know how expensive it is in Europe, but HP5+ in 100' rolls at B&H is almost as cheap per roll as buying Arista films.

As I stated in another thread prices for HP5 are skyrocketing.

6 years ago when I started studying I payed 3,5 Euros per roll (probably even cheaper if I had bought 50 or more at once) Now they are up to 4,80 (wholesale) and my supplier told me he hadn't updated the prices in the onlineshop as they are now at 8 euros.
