Hey there everyone ( happy Australia day to my fellow aussies)

I'm really new to cameras and I was thinking of getting a SLR to help start my collection (I have a Minolta Hi-Matic F coming in the post) so I was curious as to know if either of these are a good deal?:


A canon FX

I'm leaning more towards the Canon as it is in my country (always helpful) but I've never heard of Chinon. Is this a good brand? better than the canon?
Both cameras are around my price range $60-70 and I'm really into old cameras, (especial 60's - 70's just like my price range oddly enough) not new stuff like DSLR's haha (sorry)

any suggestions???

Both fine. The Canon FX was my first 'real' camera, a gift from my father. I still have it, had it CLA'd recently. It's quite nice. However, the Chinon uses M42 lenses - more of them about. However, the Canon FL lenses are quite cheap because the Canon FL mount is an orphan system. Six of one, half a dozen of the other. Quality-wise, I think the Canon will be better built of the two.

Canon FX often suffered from silver separation of the prism due to bad adhesive on the tape that went over it over the years. I'd check with the seller to see if he sees 'dirt' or anything like that in the viewfinder. Such a problem cannot be fixed except with a donor camera that doesn't suffer the problem.

It's a personal thing, but I tend to avoid buying stuff on eBay from sellers like this who obviously don't know anything about what they're selling. I'd rather buy from someone who has used the camera themselves, or at least is knowledgeable about them.

or a Chinon CS

And this one is from overseas, which makes the value of an apparently cheap camera not as good as buying locally (unless it is something hard to find). What state are you in? I think you'd have better luck trawling the second-hand shelves of local camera shops.

I'm in NSW Croweater, my second hand shops are pretty ordinary haha. But I have been keeping my eye on them 😉

I was thinking of the canon, but silver separation problems hmmm... haha this looks like it could be a harder choice then I thought!?!

I've been looking around for lenses both FL and M42(prices seem to scare me) so I probably won't get another lens straight away. Where do you guys but lenses from?

It might be worth contacting forum member David Murphy .... he sells all sorts of gear throught the classifieds and often has some excellent older SLR's for very little money! link
