Good Films and Development UK

For buying film I have used:

http://www.mailshots.co.uk
http://www.speedgraphic.co.uk
( I didn't know about http://www.ag-photographic.co.uk/ , but glad I read the thread, will give them a try).

Do consider developing your own B&W. It's really not that hard, especially with all the tutorials to watch on youtube etc.

Try different films and see what you like. I have settled on Kodak TriX 400 and sometimes Fuji Acros 100, but you may prefer the look of something different.

Silverprint have Agfa APX100 and it cost me £1.99 a roll
I also have used AG Photographic, both retailers are very good.
Though it might be easier to buy a C41 black and white to start with, although if you look on ebay you probably could find all the bits to dev your own film for less than £50.
I can not advise on colour labs as I use a couple of small local shops and I know one does not do mail order, but they have always been friendly etc.
Then there are the usual suspects for low cost film 7 dayshop. I have normally found their prices to be ok.

I've used Peak for about 20 years. Quality is generally good but I've had the odd strangely-developed roll of Reala (high contrast and odd colour balance). Their scanning is eye-wateringly expensive so I bought my own scanner which both does a better job and has paid for itself in six months. I gave up on MF when they started scanning it as part of the printing process; the quality went from fantastic to terrible overnight (visible pixellation).

Metrocolourlab are OK but they once cut a film strip carelessly and ruined a negative. Their scans are cheaper but tend to be dusty.

Another vote for Ag Photographics. Excellent service and good prices. Sometimes the have special deals on short dated films.

Just spotted this on ebay.co.uk item No: 150695584338

I don't know anything about them but their price for Agfa APX in 36exp's seems reasonable.

Guys, how's photoexpress in the terms of dust/scratches on the negs? I am using Fujilab (photofilmprocessing.co.uk) at the minute and they are good, but I see photoexpress is much cheaper (processing only, as I don't need prints)!

Thanks
W

Wojtek - first of all I really like some of your photos! I've just got into film and was going to use Fujilab myself so glad to see you rate them.

Hey James, thanks for the kind words. I would like to point out that the photographs on the site I have developed myself. I am using Fujilab for my 'holiday' photos.

Having said that, they are very good. 🙂

;D

Don't worry. There's always a little bit of risk involved, but if you haven't seen any boo-boos over 50 rolls, then it will most likely be ok...
