good news and bad news

ok, the good news is i got the aperture blades back into place

the bad news is a gave it a hit of canned air and sent the whole fliipin' thing into the air.
who knew the bloody ring wasn't attached to anything. i could have moved the blades back together so much easier had i known...
i now have a jigsaw puzzle and i doubt it will ever get back together now...at least not buy me.

I want the the video. 😀

Too Much to Bear...

Canned Air! NNNOOOOOOoooooooo.

Use a "Phhfftt Phhhffttt", small squeeze bulb air cleaner. More control.

In the camera shop (back in the '70s) all we used the canned air for was spit ball battles. It freezes them as they are propelled at fantastic rates.

It's not that bad - All you need is four hands with 10 double jointed fingers on each - easy! 😉

When I get itchy fingers with any Leica stuff that I think I can repair myself, I think of the attached warning 🙂

OTOH, I did "repair" a friends Nikon FM2 two days ago. It was stuck, with shutter blades frozen in half-closed position.
I just opened the bottom, took a good look at the mechanism, moved a lever, and was able to wind the sucker. After that, the camera works just fine 🙂 Once in a while you deserve to get lucky, I guess.
But, when dealing with Leica stuff, ALWAYS remember what is says in the attached picture 😀

Joe,

don't touch ANYTHING for the next couple days.

Trust me, your experience reminds me of some of my own with plastic models long time ago.

And the most valuable lesson I learned is that sometimes it's better to stop 😉

Do the Homer Simpson thing and get distracted with whatever crosses in front of you (aka 'Oh look! a dog with a curly tail!) 😉

joe, I feel I should apologise to your for how hard I laughed at the mental image this gave me.

I have a J8 I got for GBP0.50 that I've been toying with the idea os disassembling out of curiosity. But I'm to nervous to - and that was before reading of your adventures!

I sent all five of my Leica's to Essex for CLA's. And five Leitz lenses. Anything else, I'll tackle myself.

Slightly OT, but does anyone know of either:

a) Any online instructions for freeing up stuck aperture blades in an M42 fit Flektogon 35/2.4, or
b) Anywhere in the UK that might unstick 'em and not charge twice the cost of the lens?

I had a go at it a while back, and got them moving again, but they re-jammed a week later 🙁

How's about the cost of the return postage? Send me a PM and I will see what I can do.

Well, Joe, anything happening with this lens?

i got one quote from essex in new jersey.

on monday, gerry, from kinderman here in canada is going to call me. i sent an email to him but he was off for a few days.
my preference is to send it to him just for ease of shipping/no customs etc.
he has a great rep.

Well, first you take a can of compressed air...

Love, Back Alley

😀

What a drag-paying somebody else. If you decide to continue on your own, there may be instructions in library books (Tomosy, etc.) I can photocopy.

I'm glad my canned air is in the supply closet, with the vacuum cleaner and our stock of light bulbs, very much away from my studio and my cameras! 🙂

Sorry, joe, but you're right about not living this one down! 😀
