What magazines consistently have stimulating photography? I'm not talking ones that tell you the best RAW filter or how to split tone, but magazines that have interesting photography month to month. I'm looking for things that are more edgy, not your "fine print" Ansel Adams kind of stuff obsessing about the zone system but something like Fader or what Life once was.

Could be fashion/art, could be news/reportage, could be just general culture mags. Just something to stimulate my visual brain where they are great photographs.

Does 'Photo' fit your needs? I get the French edition most months and usually like at least some of it.

'Car' magazine (it's British) is visually superb.

Lenswork is tops in my book. Brooks Jensen (the editor) also has a nice podcast, when he updates it.

B&W Phography, the English one, is also very good.

I guess I'm looking more for non-photo specific magazines that just have great photography.

Probably more street photography/urban culture oriented.

I keep finding myself reading National Geographic while waiting for a haircut or in a Drs. office. Photowise I think its awsome. I actually just got myself a subscription.

It might not be what You are looking for, but I am rather amazed by the photos in some edgy fashion magazines. For the moment two french ones comes to mind: Self Service and Purple. It is far from traditional photo journalism (even though they sometimes mimic it). There is an odd norwegian car magazine too, Carl Cars, with great photos. There are probably thousands of this kind of artsy, high quality low volume picture magazines around the world and they are mostly rather inspiring.

Probably should have made my original post a little more clear.

I'm looking more for edgy, urban photography or if not urban than stuff with an urban sensibility, not really the pure nature that NG does. Although when they do go into stuff with human elements it's usually good, just doesn't grab me really.

I guess I'm looking for stuff that is more innovative or eye catching rather than technically "good" photography. I'm not sure that what I'm looking for exists but I thought I'd throw it out there to see.

I often see maybe some fashion layout where I'm impressed with the look or perhaps the odd news photograph that does something a little different. Just wondering if there is a place for this type of stuff. I'd imagine it might be a Euro magazine or perhaps Japanese where there are hot or maybe unknown photographers of all different sorts shooting interesting, diverse assignments.

'Next Level' might be of interest to you. It comes out twice yearly and does seem to specialize in the urban, gritty and sometimes downright weird photography that it sounds like you are after. Sometimes gets a little too arty for me at times, but your description of 'innovative, eye-catching rather than technically good photography' fits this magazine precisely.

Looking in a copy I have to hand, the contact address is: info (at) nextleveluk (dot) com
and the website is www.nextleveluk.com

All the best,

Dan

another magazine, anthem, asahi camera, big, lodown, nippon camera, tank, xlr8r.

These and Next Level all look like what I'm looking for. Next time I'm in a nice international magazine store in Manhattan I'll seek these out.

Thanks.

On-Line, you may want to check out the following:

1) Ball-Saal
A photocommunity with some very talented photographers.
Check out the forums, the dance floor and the member galleries.
Shy of altphotos.com this may be the best 'general photography' photo site/community out there.

2) FILE Magazine
This online magazine often have some pretty interesting projects featuring some excellent photography.

3) AK47.tv
Very enjoyable online publication with great photos.

Hamburger Eyes is great aside from the captions which infuriate me. I used to buy the Face before it went under. I-D (not International Design) is fun sometimes. I bought a few issues of Issue a while ago but I can't find it anymore.
