Just got a new to me (used) M8 in black in the mail yesterday. Shot about 20 frames, now the camera stopped working.
I hope is not the sudden death syndrome. I'll put in my other battery tonight and give it a go.
So bummed out....

thanks for the kind words... i wasn't aware that SDS is a rare term nowadays. I understand the firmware is 2.004 (most recent)?
Can't wait till i get off work. It's driving me crazy.

mr dan: don't worry yet. changing the battery may completely resolve things.

You'll be happy to know, at least, that this state of being is not the exclusive domain of M8 owners.

Drove me crazy when it happened to me the first time and a few times after that. Solution: keep your original batteries always charged and in top form and you'll be good for at least 300 shots. The battery level indicator is not very accurate on my M8. Also, upgrade to the latest firmware (2.005).

It will be alright. I went through SDS and NJ repaired my camera free of charge (the even posted the return for free). Chances are better that you have a battery issue rather than SDS. Unless your camera saw very, very little use before you got it. Any issues like this likely would have already come up.

good luck, dan. i second the advice to charge your batts fully before you use them, at least while you work out the shutdown problem. and use the leica OEMs if you have one to eliminate any potential aftermarket incompatibility.

According to the seller the camera has it's shutter replaced already. Other than that nothing really stands out.

good deal!!
good deal!!
A heck of a lot less than fixing the rewind crank on a "minty" M4P or M6!

Sorry to hear that on your first M8. Hope it is nothing serious.

An update:
Plop the second battery in as soon as i got home (and i haven't even taken off my shoes).... turn on the camera... nothing. My heart sunk.
Last resort, took the ginormous battery charger out, put the battery and patiently waited...
2 hours later, dropped the battery in, and bam! The camera came back to life. Fire the shutter, everything seems ok.
Thanks for everyone and your support. I can finally start enjoying my first digital M.
