Maybe to attach a rangefinder? Separate shoe-mounted rangefinders were pretty common back then.It could be used for flash at closer distances as it focuses as close as 5'. It would be hard with this lens as there seems to be no sync socket and you would have to run the wire out the front of the camera. I've been testing the focus and shutter and I think it is ready enough for shooting some real photos. No light leaks either with my adapted Graflex 35 roll film back.

Not if it focuses to five feet thoughI thought that and then it occurred to me that a rangefinder on an aerial camera would be about as much use as flash!
Extremmely low flying aeirial portraiture, difficult to go through with helicopters without disturbing the subject. Not if it focuses to five feet though
Choosing just among cameras that are likely to see some actual use, this one is pretty steampunky, especially with the 35mm lens
I've been told that - but I feel like the turret sort of goes with the exposed gears and levers on the camera. The original Voigtlånder viewfinder which cleverly projected the frames via the blackended viewfinder belongs to its punkiness.

I think it's a Nizo Heliomatic 8mm film camera. I love Nizos, have two of them. 801 macro and Professional. Both Super-8. Beautiful Dieter Rams/Robert Oberheim designs and amazing machines! Can you tell us anything about this beauty? I can't find anything.
Ansco Memo by Neal Wellons, on Flickrand single stroke rapid film advance! It's time for another Steampunk; this time a very small one.

1927 vertical feed half-frame camera with special film cassettes.
It looks like Nizos invented the steampunk esthetics regarding imaging equipments...Needs more lenses...View attachment 4889882
