Got my Hexar AF!

... and it rocks. Thanks to StuartR for suggesting it (I'd never even heard of them) and Chaser for selling me one.

Nice photo--the lens is damn sharp, isn't it?? I plan on using my hexar more these days as it fits in my winter coat pocket and becomes a true P&S. It's a fun camera.

Thanks. And that's wide-open, too. I'm going to have a great time with it.

That's another great shot, Merciful! The Hexar AF is a nice camera, but it is the photographer, not the equipment that counts! This is a shot that this father/son (I'm guessing) will treasure more and more as the years pass by. Fantastic.

Thanks very much, Frank (and I hope they will.)

You're right, of course, on camera v. photographer, but I find the Hexar is letting me get shots that would be doubtful with both the Rollei 35 (probably would have blown the focus, one stop slower) or XA (one stop slower lens, ISO 800 fastest possible, absurdly fiddly focus.) Now, with my everyday camera, I can just relax and let it flow, nearly as well as with a traditional RF.

I'm glad you're happy with one. About a year ago I handled one at a camera store... and found it a bit too unwieldy for my taste. However, it's been said its lens is the famed Hexanon 35/2 also used for the Konica Hexar RF, so I can attest to its power and versatility, 'cuz I have one.

Now... if my own Leicas were as pocketable as that Hexar of yours... :)

Francisco, I guess you still need rather big pockets for it :)

As always, very nice work, I bet you'll have fun with the Hexar.

Nice shot Merciful.

Now for those of us who have never handled one, just how quiet is this reputedly 'silent' shutter in your estimation?

It's absolutely and totally quiet. The only way you really know you've taken a photo is that the framelines spring back into place.

I'm in NY on a job (someone here helped me sort out a stuck rewind button) and it really helps me get photos I could never get with another camera. You can set up the shot while you're chatting to your subject, then click and they think you're still setting it up - you get more natural expressions, and it makes it all much less formal. This camera is actually my girlfriend's, but I'm thinking of buying my own and selling my M4; 35mm is a pretty good focal length that I use most of the time anyway. The only drawback is that it's actually no less bulky than an M4.

The day they produce a digital version I'll be camping outside the store overnight...

Thanks again, guys.

It really does have a quieter shutter than an M. In a silent room, it's audible; with any conversation, simply not. In "silent mode", the AF, advance, and rewind are even quieter than normal, and the advance is held until you release the button.
