Got my Lumix 20mm f1.7 in the mail today

By the way, a few more new shots from this lens, from over this weekend.

Some G1/20mm f/1.7 Street Images

I took the opportunity to take the G1 out today with the 20/1.7 lens attached. Still had a bit of hunting that the 14-45 lens doesn't do, as if, under certain circumstances, the lens decides to focus the wrong direction at first, then reverses and goes the correct way. Not a show stopper; I also used manual focus a bit on the indoor shots, which worked very well.

All images in-camera JPEGs using the dynamic B/W mode, ISO200.

Nice pics, JoeV, and I like your blog too. I have the same typewriter and enjoyed that David Foster Wallace quote.

I was a bit surprised to see that Photozone.de didn't like this lens more--he posted a review yesterday. He's rather exacting in his standards, but still--he complains a bit about corner softness.

FWIW, I like this lens because its rendering (barely noticeable corner softness included) reminds me of a rangefinder lens...except totally sharp in the center at 1.7. There aren't many lenses at this price for any system which are indistinguishable in the center at 1.7 and 5.6.

I'm expecting mine tomorrow, and plan to take it to Italy next weekend, attached to my G1. I'm thrilled with the Images you guys have posted. I think I'm going to be very pleased !

Yes, the GF1 does apply corrections to RAW--or rather, Panasonic has gotten Adobe to apply the corrections in PS/LR. I'm sure that chart is with software correction though--I haven't seen any unprocessed RAW yet, ie., from dcraw.

Yeah it is with software correction. Any Adobe raw converter will do it without you needing to do anything as well. The E-p1 will also apply this to both jpeg and raw files, just not the CA correction that panasonic does.

My 20/1.7 arrives tomorrow and a Heavystar hood with cap arrives the next day. I would love to have a funky rectangular hood someday.

Barrel distortions and CA are corrected automatically in jpegs. The RAW file contains correction data for SilkyPix. Lightroom also reads and applies these corrections. The data is sent from a chip inside the lens to the camera. This means any M 4/3 camera will apply the barrel distortion correction. Uncorrected RAW files may be observed with other RAW converters.

Based on my experience with PTLens and Nikon RAW files (Nikkor 12-24/4 lens), barrel distortion correction does not produce noticeable (if any) cropping. Perhaps PTLens auto-crops barrel distortion corrections (it does not auto-crop perspective distortion corrections).

At least Panasonic and Olympus give you the barrel distortion corrections for at no extra cost. Nikon NEFs – even those from their most expensive lenses – require the purchase of additional software to fix lens distortion problems.

The advantage of the Tessar design is compactness. The disadvantage is edge sharpness. The DP Review data also shows the edge sharpness performance wide open is not awe inspiring. At f 2.8 edge sharpness looks fine. Because of the sensor size, I don't plan to stop down below f 5.6. Of course the only thing that matters are the prints. I'll report back after I use the lens for a while.

The Leica 25/1.4 would certainly give better wide open performance. But it's angle-of-view, weight and price are very different.

this thread is making me crazy.

i have a 20 on hold but just need the cash for it...2 more weeks to go.
i envision all sorts of fun with it and the g1.

Picked up my 20/1.7 at the P.O. today. It's waiting for me at home. I forgot about ordering a hood (I knew I had to, but I procrastinated--I never thought the thing would ever ship!)

I am in the same boat. I am waiting on an expense check. Amazing how profitable driving to Philadelphia can be.

Thanks for motivating me to do my next expense report. I've bought a bunch of OM flash gear with the last cheque, not to mention a new universal remote (a half-decent one is not cheap, a good one VERY not cheap!) and am soon to acquire Sevres-Babyon's unloved olive F802.

:D
