Got my Lumix 20mm f1.7 in the mail today

I have been doing alot of walk-around shooting with my G1/20mm combo. I have never used a 40mm (efl) lens before. I kind of took a pass on the hype around the CV 40mm lens when it came out. However, I must say that I am finding the 40mm efl to be remarkably right. Perhaps this is because 40mm is the angle of view of human eyesight (as claimed about the CV 40mm lens.) I don't know. But where 35mm seems too wide and 50mm seems too long, the 40mm is just Goldilocks right. I am really enjoying it. Will post photos shortly. (My MAC crashed yesterday. :-( )

Me neither. In fact, I only had to do it once in recent times on Windows XP, and that on a system that was almost 4 years old and had a hardware lockup that required a hard restart. I'm hoping this new MacBook doesn't have some intermittent hardware problem that will require me to do it again.

I'm waiting for the next generation of micro 4/3 cameras, they seem to still have a few things to iron out. I don't have much money, so I'd better buy a mature product. They look promising, though. Kind of a real RF digital replacement. Small, lightweight, unconspicuous.

Congratulations on your purchase. The shots shared here look very nice. I'm particularly impressed by the B/W ones!

I remeber a funny advertisement. A man comes home late (he was at his girlfriend before). His wife asks why he comes so late. He says: problems with the car. She slaps him in the face. "Problems? With a Mercedes?"

Also imagineable with a Mac. She: "Why didn't you have time yesterday?" He: "Had to reinstall everything because my Mac crashed". Slap! She: "Liar".
 
Oh god, I have fallen in love with a lens for my digi camera, and it's sooooo good, I tremble when I export my RAW's off the SD...

Can't wait to take this lens to London in a few weeks.

It always rains when I get a new lens.

ISO 640, vertical crop to 2X3, f 1.7, 1/100, NR and sharpening are Lightroom 2.5 defaults. The crop has a luminance NR value of 50.

The vignetting at f 1.7 is not trivial. It's a bit more than my C-Sonnar at 1.5. If I remember correctly, it's much worse than my Canonet QL-17 at 1.7.

The 20/1.7 G excels at f 2 - f 4. At f 2.8 it is simply excellent. The edge sharpness wide open appears to be better than I expected based on the data in popular reviews. The bokeh is reasonable, but not exceptional to my eye. (But then I'm used to the C-Sonnar which costs much more).

The lens could slightly overpriced $400. On the other hand this lens greatly expands the utility of the G1. For one thing the kit lens has a huge DOF at 20mm due to it's variable aperture of the LUMIX 14-45 G VARIO. With the 20/1.7 attached the camera just the right size. So I don't mind the price.

How long have you had it? I have found that ALL of the cheap, large, external drives I buy have failed within 1 year; some do not work out of the box. I finally understood the business model of the large disk drive makers: Give the drive away and then charge $2K to recover the lost data. (Usually just gone because of a failed power supply. Easy and cheap money.)

Off topic, but since it's your thread Ted:

I've had a couple LaCie's and a Western Digital go on me. I have had no problems with Seagate drives for about three years now. I have two at home and one in the lab. My experience isn't much data, but as long as they keep cranking, I'm sticking with the Seagate drives.

I just replaced a colleague's Time Capsule. Apparently the power supply components can get toasted from too much heat (relative to their rating). I hope they've improved those components. Luckily, he still had Apple Care on his Mac, and the Apple Store accepted that and replaced the Time Capsule. He's also getting an external drive on my recommendation. Keep it simple is my rule.
 
I have a MacBook Pro and I use SuperDuper to make a carbon copy of my hard drive - actually I have two copies of my hard drive. I use Lacie firewire drives so I can use them as system drives and do a restore from them. This has been used when my Mac was stolen. This takes about 15 mins every week to refresh the back-ups - no issue at all.
