That GC-5 belt case looks cool, anyone know when will it be available? (I suppose the GC-3 doesn't fit? Anyone tried?)
Just found out this post on pentaxforums. Lots of shallow DoF pictures. Really impressive. I'm sold.

was that a behaviour in your GRD3? when i used to have a pentax i always had to fight with the metering which was annoying and i'm wondering if this is some of the "pentax features" of the device
My GRD3 will happily open up to f/1.9 - to compensate for its tiny sensor.
The GR's manual states the camera will choose f/4 for EV1 to EV10 (ISO100)... I assume that it's deliberately designed so to utilize its high ISO capability and sweet spot in lens resolution.
In real world it's a little annoying though. But Ricoh does have a good history of listening to its customers, so hopefully they'll fix this in the coming firmware updates.

It's so easy not to use program mode (with all of the other modes available), that I can't see that being a big issue.

So, those of you who have the camera and have been playing around with it:
How is the AF in low light with fast-moving subjects (eg. kids/street shots)?
That is the one question mark hanging over this camera for me - and the reason I sold my X2...

It's too slow in low light without the green assist lamp. With the green assist lamp, it's only ok. They will have to tweak the FW just to make it acceptable without the lamp. It's fast in sunlight... very fast.

Like everyone said, pretty standard performance for this generation: AF is instant in good light and hunts a bit in low light. Both subject tracking and continous AF will work fine in the day, but may not be good for indoor kids at night. I don't have any kids to test with - though it certainly had a hard time nailing it for my (black) cat sprinting around on dark brown floor.
but again for street shots,
It's so easy not to use AF (with all of the other modes available), that I can't see that being a big issue.

The AF without the light assist in low light is not very good, as it hunts back and forth, and thinks it is in focus when it is not. With the AF Auxiliary Light is it fast but the green light is annoying. During the day it is really fast for the most part.
My GRDIII without any assist light focuses on the same subject, same light, without any issue and does so A LOT faster. I've tried this multiple times. Firmware issue? Dunno.
I'll play around with it for another day before deciding to return it.

You are going to return it based on that?

You are going to return it based on that?I would give Ricoh time to respond.
I am… a few days. Answering a question someone has posed and stating I may or may not return the thing doesn't equate to a sole reason for doing so.

I didn't mean to irritate you, it just makes me wonder what you expected from the camera.

No, no… not irritated at all. Apologize for making it seem that way.
I simply wanted a GRD with a bigger sensor, nothing more, nothing less. My first impression is that the camera seems a bit more sluggish and confused compared to the GRDIII. Is it because of the larger sensor? Could be.
I do know that I'll spend more time with it over the weekend, this way I'll be able to figure out if it's the camera itself or me getting through the learning curve of a new camera.

Did you buy the III on day one of release (prior to firmware tweaks)? I truly think the new GR will be improved upon drastically via firmware updates. It seems the norm with Ricoh.

This was posted from mirrorless rumors. I actually don't look at their site at all.. No clue in how accurate they maybe compared to real world. Any mirrorless brought up the compare info.. Nikon ended up better in terms of overall score, but only by a couple of points. In real life is it better?

This is, quite simply, exactly what I want as well. I've had large-sensor p+s cameras but I have sold them all. Seems the tech is just not there yet to allow them to be as responsive as they need to be.
A camera that cannot respond cannot take the photo we want it to take. That, sorry to say, is a useless camera.
Maybe in a few years they'll get there, but it seems that as much as I'd love a large-sensor GR, I'll be keeping my OM-D (and my GRDIV) as companion to my Leica Ms.

Picked one up in December 2010, so I'd have to look when they first shipped. If I recall, that seems a year or two after the initial release.
Knowing Ricoh… I agree, they deliver in terms of keeping up with their products. Being a early adopter can be frustrating but if the issue becomes something that cannot be fixed by means of firmware, ultimately I'll have to work around it. Large sensor + snap focus + pocketable = maybe enough to justify any issue.
Everything else about the camera seems to be great and the layout/interface is the usual well thought out.

It's too early to say, as I've only had the camera for a day. Take my word with a grain of salt! Ha ha.
I know you are a big night shooter, as I am too, so the focus thing may sting a bit if not improved. Like I said, it's lower light conditions where things get weird. During the day in bright conditions the camera seems fine.

Nonetheless I will put it through its paces over the next few days and re-evaluate how I feel.

The camerastore tv comparison, pretty good watch if you enjoy their comparison styles
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykbDLN15uxA
the conclusion is basically it's so close between the cameras, go with the ricoh for price and nikon if you love nikon handling

personally for me, i'm not sure if these cameras is sufficient enough upgrade from the X100 so i guess it will hang around a bit longer for me. plus the resale market for X cameras does seem a bit lousy. something i paid $1300 for last year shouldn't be worth $500. that's bad depreciation even in camera terms.

Any comments about the shutter sound?
I've been reading conflicting reports about the volume of the shutter sound, everything from being as quiet as the Fuji X100, to as loud as the GXR 28mm aps-c module. Now if the latter, this is not cool, as the aps-c modules are quite distinct and not at all what I would want to use in a museum or art gallery.
Any comments and comparisons? Mine arrives next Wednesday and I'm fully preparing myself for a metallic KACHONK of death.
