FYI - I am not dissing this camera because it doesn't come with a charger - all I'm saying is people should be aware that it does not come with an external charger![]()
I appreciated the comment since I didn't realize that... at first you scared me because I thought I wasn't going to be able to charge the camera when I got it (without buying something extra).

I'm just waiting for this to show up for preorder on Popflash...
This camera - with its performance, size, and price - is a disruptive move that will get Ricoh a lot of attention. It's exciting and gratifying to see.

Let's face it - separate charger is a must, except battery keeps on in multiples of 12-14hrs which will be sufficient for daily and nightly shooting. But if one needs it for more than 14hrs.?
OK, this is done to cut costs but really, it's a step back. Camera isn't a phone which has battery buried inside or even isn't retrieveable.

I'm excited but really this is a niche within a niche. The only one it's disruptive for is Nikon who will have to drop the price on the Coolpix A.
For everyone except people like us, a fixed lens 28mm is a non-starter no matter what sensor it has in it.
Most camera users want a zoom and at $800 they can get a DSLR with a kit zoom or two super zoom point and shoots.

Nope. My mom uses 28-something P&S exclusively at 28mm setting and is perfectly comfortable with camera which "includes more in frame". She isn't using zoom control, never. But then she also don't prefocus, never - but tiny sensor covers good portion of focus error.
When I think....she could be good candidate for GR if I test it myself for several years

What?:bang:
Perhaps you charge it via power cable straight to camera... yes, that's how it works. That's fine with me. You scared me for a minute.

Your dp2m battery should work. Jon told me about the gr batteries working on the dp Merrill's. so I ordered a pair of clone batteries made by wasabi that fit in the dp2m fine, a bit tight.. The batteries charged fine in my Merrill charger.

Their Ricoh stock seems to be down to nothing... are you sure they will carry it anymore?

I was beginning to feel a bit sorry for Ricoh. I have owned a GR1s, GRD, GRDII, GRDIII and GXR, and currently own a GRD-IV, but I recently purchased an OMD as I really felt that I needed higher quality (for prints) than the tiny sensor would allow.
That said, there was, and is, nothing that compares to the UI of the Ricoh GR line.
I'm still holding my breath: every large sensor camera I've owned that wasn't an SLR or a rangefinder suffered from laggy AF. If Ricoh have sorted this out, at that size, at that price, with that sensor and that UI - home run guys and bravo.
There's a good chance the OMD will soon be looking for a new home...

Huh? batteries are cheap... buy a few of them, charge them and be prepared.

It is the same wasabi batteries that Jim pointed out in his post above. The one that has two batteries and charger db65. Post 227.

I preordered it instantly because of price and GR heritage—and this camera looks perfect on paper—but in 2013 what is the point of a big prime compact when we have awesome camera phones and digital rangefinders?
Well, if you are satisfied with your cellphone, then there is no point to a P&S... but cellphones ergonomic don't do it for me personally and as good as they have become, they are still tiny sensor cameras with the IQ that comes along with that. I guess some people feel cameras like the Ricoh are "real" cameras that don't compromise much on quality (due to the larger sensor) vs. their main cameras. Of course, use what works best for you and your photography...and that certainly could be a cellphone.

~eight times more expensive M9 sans lens? Or you mean aged Epson RD-1? Not aware of other DRF's....

Imagine...you return with three empty batteries, attach cord to camera in a room...after five minutes you want to take a shot...now what?
I realize 95% of people are perfectly fine with charger-less configuration, but then they also wouldn't miss GR interface and APS-C sensor.

Most of those who will buy the Ricoh GR will do it because they liked the GR line throughout the years. If you've used them previously, it'll be hard to justify the Coolpix A over the GR even if the prices were the same. The coolpix is a nice camera, but the GR series ergonomics and UI are special to former users.
The truth! I've had a GR1 and currently own a GRD3. Really great cameras. No way I would consider the Coolpix A. If the GR sucks (which it won't!), I'd just keep using the GRD3.

I won't got that far!

Ken Rockwell just have announced he doesn't dig interface of digital cameras. He argues there are no dedicated dials for speeds or aperture, but never asks for what wheels on both sides of shutter release are meant for. How he is able to operate his DSLR's?
And, finally, he compares GR to X100. With all my tolerance I have to ask if it's a sign of sane person to compare 28mm lens to 35mm?
Sigh.

Definitely not an apple to apple comparison unless he is just trying to point out difference in user interface.. Have not gone over to look at his site yet.
