GR Digital V to have APS-C sensor

What's the shutter sound like for this camera? I think I watched all available videos I could find online on the GR but in none of them there is an actual shutter actuation.
I wish it was as quiet as my X100.

Supposedly it's a leaf shutter as well so it should be similar to the X100 and Leica X1/X2.

If u hear any noise.. I would guess it may come from af mechanism or the maybe the default sounds from the camera such as emulated shutter sound which u can normally turn off. But from the actual leaf shutter, I would expect neglible to none.

Gary, I've used a few leaf shutter cameras and there is always a distinct audible click if you want to hear it. Most of the time in use with normal ambient noise, you only feel it rather than hear it. I'm not talking about recorded sounds.

I can't hear the leaf on my dp Merrill's when it goes off.. But I do feel it sometimes. The Ricoh gxr a12 50 u can hear the af mechanism and sometimes I think I may have heard the shutter ( not sure since my hearing is not as good any longer).

I think we are basically saying the same thing though.

But really speculating on what possible noise maybe heard from either Coolpix a or grd v was where my comment was coming from.

The GXR aps-c modules have a distinct click to their shutters despite being leaf. The Leica X1 is similar, even though a lot of people say it is almost silent. And don't get me started on that horrible TICK TICK TICK of the X1 aperture changing that drove me mad. The Fuji X100 's shutter is far more quiet than any of those cameras, and I hope Ricoh have managed to put the GR into that league.

Looks very nice.

Since I have the Ricoh GXR, and both the A12 28mm and A12 50mm camera units, I doubt I need one of these. The GXR+A12 28mm does a superb job.

For those who grouse about the lack of viewfinder, remember that the LCD *is* a viewfinder for many. And the Ricoh GV-2 viewfinder is tiny, light and good quality if you want an optical eye-level viewfinder too. I use the GXR configured this way quite a lot:

The GR will be a bit smaller, without the complexities/flexibility of the camera unit design, and hasn't the option for an EVF.

Not that it matters too much, but what kind of a file size difference will I see when I upgrade to this from the IV? I'm not really a digital guy, the IV is the only digital camera I've ever owned. I might have to budget for a new external harddrive before too long.

While Henry's of Canada was having their close out sale.. Not as expensive. Almost everything was close to half off.. All the a12 modules were between 249 and 300. B&h and the ther Ricoh distributors are still selling normal price.

I don't have the prior model.. But I would expect raw to be around 13-16 mb. Jpg depends on the compression chosen.

I didn't realize the GV-2 VF was half off too.

DNG range from 13MB to 19MB; JPG in the 5 to 7MB range.

Personally, if I was very worried about hardrive space/backup, I'd just get one of those hardrive toaster things which lets you buy cheap internal drives and pop them in and out and buy a bunch of 1 gig drives and rotate them. Basically you could treat hardrives like removable media.

(maybe not that specific one as it gets mediocre reviews but I think lots of companies make similar stuff)

I don't believe the Gv-2 was ever part of the sale. Henrys seemed to have chosen to not put anything they deemed an accessary on sale. The vf actually never comes up on my search when I do it using "Ricoh GXR".

and expensive... :)

High quality optics are always expensive. It's one reason I prefer these cameras to not come with the usual cheesy built-in optical viewfinder ... I'd rather they put that money into the camera's hardware and software rather than a crappy optical viewfinder, and I can always buy a viewfinder when I need one.

A good optical viewfinder is typically a $200 retail piece. A Zeiss or Leica double that. For the GR with its 3:2 format sensor, I'd get a Voigtländer 28mm ($210) as the GV-2 is a 4:3 proportion finder.
