GR Digital V to have APS-C sensor

I've been using my GRD3 for a couple of months, and as a died-in-the-wool VF kind of guy, I am surprised that I don't miss one. I even bought a VF for it but haven't used it 🙂bang🙂. The great thing about the GRD is that you can do everything one handed. No need to balance the camera with the other hand and with that, for me, you don't feel the need to bring the camera to your eye. Bright sun does wash out the LCD, however. The size of the new GR is not much bigger than the GRD and that is win win!

Same here and I feel silly too, given that I already own an X100 and many other premium film cameras (including a GR1s). I feel like I can't be happy without the new GR in my bag :bang:

THAT.. right there.. is what I mean when I say that the Ricoh's ergonomics will trump just about any other camera on the market right now.

Yes it's fixed lens.
Yes it's wide angle.

The ergonomics are key because we're now entering a point in time where there's very little difference in terms of image quality and/or high ISO etc.

I know the GR will do incredibly well for Pentax / Ricoh and, as a guy who started out with Pentax many many many moons ago; it does make ms smile... 🙂

Anyone heard an actual release date beyond "May 2013". Just wondering if that means beginning, middle or end. Seems like they are orchestrating the roll out pretty well judging by the response here and elsewhere.

Indeed. Of course, having all the buttons on the right side helps... but I'm left handed and find the GR series to be very comfortable to use.

I also started out with Pentax. Underdog and all that!

Thats the killer for me, shooting in the sun with lcd only I find torture, no matter what talk of improved coatings, etc, that gets bandied about. I like everything else about the GRD, just wish camera companies did not all feel that the availablility of a clip on viewfinder, optical or evf, is the same as one built into the camera..

Sadly, you're right. In addition to my above concerns, I do not even see with a hotshoe optical viewfinder, how you are supposed to know what you've focussed on. At least on the bright side, there are smallish cams like the XE-1/ X20 that have built in viewfinders..

The dp Merrill series has a green/red led light close to the hot shoe area so that one only needs to glance down w/ the ovf mounted.

Given that we are talking about ovf... I believe the answer is somewhat obvious. But if u have setup center af, then your half press is going to have a high probability of locking on something in the center of the ovf. Just recompose and take the picture. The other approach is face recognition af.

On the other hand af is not the end all do all here. For situations where hyper focal or zone are good enough, with correct f stop setting and the use of Ricoh snap focus feature, a ovf should be sufficient. In the case of dp Merrill or other cameras w/o snap focus setting up manual focus zone and ovf is also sufficient.

The point you mentioned about focus is more crucial the bigger the sensor. With the GRD everything will be in focus provided it isn't a super close up/macro. With a bigger sensor having a washed out LCD is more of an issue. My problem with the GRD is that it is so pocketable that having a VF on the top of it defeats the purpose. Oh well, no perfect cameras still.🙂

I don't plan to use an ovf unless I have too. I plan to leave ovf in pouch until I need it. The LCD on the new gr looks like same technology as on the rx100, which can handle very bright sun light.

I was very impressed with the brightness of the GR's LCD. Was shooting it side by side with the Samsung NX300 this weekend in bright midday light and had a much easier time seeing the frame on the GR compared to the NX.

I suspect that the Nikon Coolpix A has deluted the possible pool of people who would be interested in this camera type. But also the timing is not the greatest...right after tax season..
