Graduated Neutral-Density Filters & B/W Film

To avoid blown highlights in very sunny climes, can Neutral-Density Filters & B/W Film work well together? I am getting good results with Color print film.

It should work just as well with B&W as with color film. Years ago I remember seeing some graduated yellow filters for darkening blue skies on B&W film
