Here is the link to my website where the scanner comparison resides. We have maybe a couple more scanners coming to play, but so far we have 12 finished.
Howtek 4500 Drum scanner
Konica Minolta Dimage Scan Multi Pro
Fuji Finescan 5000
Epson 3200
Canon 9950F
Canon Canoscan 4000FS
Nikon V ED
Minolta Dual Scan IV
Plustek Opticfilm 7200
Minolta 5400II
Imacon 646
Epson 4870
please note that there is alot of bandwidth being used on this page, so if you don't have a real use for the information, please don't enter. But, if you're looking to buy a scanner, please do enter and see how they match up against eachother.
Things to consider are that there is some variation in the sharpness of the frames used. These scans are NOT all from the same kit of negatives, so conclude on the quality of the scanner by looking at all of its scans instead of just one.

I think we have at least one 4990 user coming soon.

Where'd my Bessa go?
I'm going to see if I can run the transparencies through an Epson V700 next week. Is there currently a V700/V750 on the list?
And perhaps some credit to the individuals who performed the scans on the various scanners might be appropriate. Just a thought...

oh yeah! The V700 will be the icing on the cake, actually.

wait a minute!
don´t know why I didn´t think of it before but I could take "Optical" enlargements from the Nikon Microscope (+ attached Nikon Digital Camera) at work!!
I could sneak into the lab were the Digital Camera Microscope stands (after the colleagues are gone of course) and make sets of different enlargements (I have to check how low/high the microscope goes)
It could be a reference point for the scanns...other there´s no real use but plain scientific interest ;-)
let me know if you are interested and if you have any neg´s left.
regards
Fred

Fred, I can send my negs to you next week. $6 via paypal to cover the cost of negs and shipping should do it.

We're all light!
Well, from first glance, the Howtek seems to take the ball and not want to give it back (hardly a surprise); killer results in all formats. More interesting was comparing the second edition of my hometown favorite (Minolta 5400) to the Imacon and Plustek: while the Imacon is better in a few respects, it hardly stomps the 5400 into the mud. The Plustek, for all its claims of higher resolution, seems to come up a bit short. The Nikon V scans look really good overall.
Big thanks for this effort, and keep it coming. This looks really interesting.

Waiting on Maitani
The Nikon does look very good, though I'd love to see the crop the same or closer to the others; I miss not seeing the fence chain as a point of comparison. Both the Minoltas look good as well.

I was going to post a sort of comment on each scanner, putting down a ranking of the best in each category, but that goes against the point of hte comparison. This is a comparison, not a contest. More for education than to win some award.
I love my scanner. That's all I have to say.

Out of the limelight
The best apperance in my opinion is the Howtek 4500 scan. Later the Minolta 5400 and the Nikon V both excellent.
Good work George.

Sorry to sound like a broken record but I think it would be appropriate to give due credit to the various individuals who contributed the scans for comparison.

you're absolutely right. I'll get on that as soon as I finish my homework here.

D'oh!
I've finished the scans with my Epson 4990 and Silverfast 6 AI. How would you like me to send them, George? I've saved the scans as TIF files, but I can send jpegs or burn a CD and drop it in the mail.
