could this be the start of a great new year?
the signs are all pointing towards that.

my mint canon p and the 35/2.8 both showed up today.

the camera is still ice cold from the delivery truck so i'm keeping it wrapped in the baggy it came in. (under a ton of bubble wrap) don't want to foggy it up.
it has the jc11 sticker on it dated---1953!
it is so beautiful i could weep. (well, kinda...)

the lens is very nice. the barrel/chrome look new. the glass has a lot of cleaning marks but i'm doubting that it will matter too muich.

i have discovered that the stats on the canon mueseum site are off though.
they say that there are 2 versions of this lens, the serenar with a 34mm filter size and the canon with a 40mm filter size.
well, mine is marked canon but has a 34 mm filter size.
and i just bought 2 canon hoods for 40mm. one i paid waaaay too much for (my fault). shoulda waited...

the lens is also very tiny but heavy. i think it's smaller than the 35/2.5 cv lens i have.
it looks fabulous on the p. i may be back to 35 for my main lens.

any way, i am too excited for words.

Hi Joe, and happy new year. That P looks pristine, congratulations.

My 35 2.8 also has the 34mm filter ring and says Canon on it. It looks identical to pictures I've seen of the Serenar so my guess is that the name changed before the lens redesign. Mine is # 16178.

By the way, I never commented on the "best camera, or favorite camera" thread because I got to it late as always. I know that I love my P and touted you on it before you bought yours but if I had to have only one it would be my Hexar AF

hey gerry,

i don't believe canon did a redesign on the 35/2.8. they are both 6/4 with f stops to 22.
the canon was a bit lighter.
of course this comes from the canon museum info.

what do you think of your lens, happy with it?

afa that hexar af, what you say scares me because i have been thinking about one for a carry (every day) camera.
but i would be nuts...

happy new year to you too frank!

joe

Joe you can't complain on how this new year has started ! :)

Btw that P looks SWEET ! IMHO one of the prettiest designs ever put on a Camera.

No Canon lover should miss the oportunity to admire and use one, together with Leicas, Nikons and more Canons. And if your name is Brian, then the P is absolutely a must have.

:p

Joe, by redesign I was talking about the change in filter size. I'm very happy with mine but I don't pay a lot of attention to MTF graphs and I rarely shoot test charts. It doesn't have the biting sharpness of the Contax G 45 2.8 and it softens a bit in the corners but I like the overall rendition, smooth with that older look. Probably at its best at about f8. As you noticed it's a dense little thing. Mine has a dent in the lens cap but otherwise is very nice.

Afa the Hexar, I just love it but you have to understand that the Hexar and the CLE are the only cameras I own with any kind of automation. There are things that you have to get past to really enjoy it. The user interface is terrible and the only cure is familiarity. I haven't been doing a whole lot of shooting since our move and next time I take the hexar out I'm going to need the manual with me.

The 1/250th top shutter speed is limiting to some people. I prefer slow film using K-25 and tech pan in the Hexar. I don't know what to do when I run out of my stash of each. It's too big for me to take everywhere, I use my Contax T for that.

Having said all that, the lens is magnificent, I've never had a misfocused or badly exposed shot and the silence is spooky. It may be the ultimate street shooter. I use it for HIE because it has auto bracketing and will automatically correct focus for IR. I've put Delta 3200 in it for an open air new Years Eve party and gotten greta results using it as a point and shoot. It's the only flash that I own and it's simplicity with greta results is amazing. I could go on, but you see how I feel about. If you have any specific questions let me know.
