Grip on R-D1s - Nikon N-2TR

Wanting a grip (and dreaming about the Luigi one but still a little undecided regarding the feasibility of constantly taking the camera out of the bag when taking out the SD card) I visited a downtown store today called Foto-C (one of three stores in town that still has qualified personnel). Since they recently re-decorated they were anxious to get rid of some of their old things.

I mentioned I have read here that Nikon made some grips that should fit and the very friendly guy disappeared out back. He then emerged with a Nikon N-2TR winder and we tried it on. Apart from 2 plastic taps (arrow 3 and 4 on the before.jpg picture), a screw that could come all out (arrow 2) and some contacts that could be filed down (arrow 1) it was a perfect fit. The customisation took only about ten minutes and apart from using the wrong shutter button all the time 😱 it really gives an edge on handling. And all that for only 19$. See attached pictures.

When I pulled off the yellow Nikon sticker another household name became visible - Soligor 😛

Weird! An R-D1s hack.
But it really looks good. Well done!

Next step: make the N-2TR winding mechanism working to cock the R-D1 shutter automatically. You get 10 minutes. And 10 minutes more to modify the N-2TR button as second custom button.

Wow thats pretty darn neat... definitly something to consider myself... BUT.. I'd take it a step forwards. Open the grip up and remove the internals for weight savings.. glue the shutter button. OH and remove that Nikon emblem.

If the winder for the Nikon FE2, FA, FM2 fits the r-d1 with minimum modifications, I would bet that this grip would fit the r-d1 as well:

I already removed the Nikon sticker - that's how I know it's a Soligor 😛

It stands at 232 grams so removing the innards would be nice. However it is glued together (I think) and there seems to be nowhere to dismantle (screws or anything) 😕

The tree version for the FM3 is nice - I saw that too - but a little pricey if it does not work.

It would be possible to saw off the area with the shutter button but that does not do the ergonomics any good. Now, if only the shop had had two!

On the upside (and with the screen folded away) the Soligor winder makes the R-D1s look a very cheapish and old camera...
