Well since l now have a 50mm 3.5 Elmar il guess l am now in the market for a Barnack, the hunt is on for a IIIa or IIIc or if l can muster the cash a IIIf....GAS attack😀
The IIIa is a wonderfully compact camera. Be aware that the rangefinder adjustment lever is a problem if you wear glasses. Raise the lever and it will scratch your glasses unless you put a bit of gaffer tape on it. The IIIc is more useable - the viewfinder window is larger; looking through the IIIa is a bit like peering down a not-well-lit tunnel. If you don't need flash synch, the IIIc will be a more affordable choice. Either way, welcome to the Barnack world. Be aware that, because the lenses are less expensive than the M series, it is much easier to justify GAS.
Friend you are in trouble. When i bought a back-up M4, an Elmar 3,5cm f3,5 came with it.
Now, besides my 2 M-mount cameras with lenses, i had to buy 2 Barnack's a IIIa and a IIIc with flash modification. I also needed to have an Elmar 5cm like yours, a Summitar, an Elmar 9cm and a Hektor 13,5 cm.
Dont forget the external viewer.
You are doomed.
Michael.
Are there 50mm Elmar 2.8 for (screw/bayonet mount?) with equivalent optical quality as those for M-Mount?
The idea got to me when I was toying about getting an M-Mount Elmar but I have thought of getting an IIIf too lately. Two birds one stone?
Yep - when you think you have the lens set, in terms of a 35, 50 and a 90 for your Barnack, you will want an external finder. The separate 50 and 90 Leica finders can be found quite reasonably (still over £50), but the 35 seems to command a higher premium. An external viewfinder, Leitz or CV, even for the 50, is a good idea.
I started out with a IIIa as well, before getting a III, IIIb, IIIc, IIIa-to-f conversion, M3, M-E....
Hang on for your life, 'cause this train ain't got no brakes! 😉
