I have the Voigtlander neveready case, which I hate because of the giant snaps on the back for the lid.
I know Luigi makes a basic case for the Bessa.
Are these really the only two options? How does, say, the R3A measure up against an M body? Will any M cases work? The Zhou ones look nice...

Problem with using an M case for a Bessa is that the strap lugs are in different positions. You can use some SLR cases though, like for the OMs (not perfect since the eye piece is in a different place).

I bought a Luigi basic case and the first thing I noticed was how much better the camera handled for me. I have big hands and the Bessa R2A was always a little small for my hands.

I bought it off RFF in new condition (package from Luigi hadn't even been opened) for a very fair price. If you watch for these deals they come up once in a while.

Why are you wanting to spend more money on a half case than a used Bessa is worth? Carry it naked!

I wasn't aware my R3A was worth less than the $80 Luigi case. Good thing I just paid $750 USD for it (w/40 Nokton) :p

My R3A and R usually do go naked, or with sidegrips attached. It'd just be nice to have a decent case for something different.

I have a black zhou case, and yes it does add as a nice grip.
It absorbs vibrations too, handy when you are feeling feisty for 1/4 second exposures.

Remove the snaps or go the Zhou case.
I have a Zhou for my ZI and rd1.
Make a best offer on one of his eBay listings.
My rd1 case he sold me for $40
admittedly before they became popular
he uses nice soft leather. These do dampen the shutter sound quite well.
A nit tight when new. Takes a while before they are shaped well to the camera.
