Halo Effect on Highlights

So I got this halo effect on my last roll and it really bugs me.



Film - Arista EDU Ultra 100
Dev - R09 60mins, 4 inversions first minute, 2 inversion at 30.
Camera - Oly 35RC shot at 2.8 (I think...it was getting dark for sure).

This is not the first time it has happened to me. It seems to be a metering issue. The keyboardist is super blown out. Or could it be a development or lens issue?

Why not try a more traditional development process and see what happens.

Its not his development process, its the film. The Arista.EDU Ultra is Fomapan 100. I have had this problem with the 35mm versions of Fomapan (though not the 120 size versions, interestingly enough). It is caused by Halation, which is when light passes through the film during exposure, bounces off the camera's pressure plate, and goes back into the film. Most films are made to prevent this by having a coating on the back or in the base to prevent light from passing through and bouncing back during exposure. For some reason, Foma's 35mm films don't.

Lucky 100 SHD has the same problem, no or very poor anti-halation layer. I've tried shooting it at EI 125 to save the highlights a bit, but you still see it.

I have this problem with Arista Premium as well. I have not had this problem with EDU Ultra in 120 either Chris Crawford.

The reason why I thought it might be a lens issue (old style coatings) was due to the fact that I shot in similar high contrast situations with a Canon 24-70L on Arista Premium with no halo to be seen. However, I did shoot that roll at 200.

Morry, I may try that. I have seen this halo crap pop up on negatives processed traditionally, but to be fair this was the first time it was bad enough for me to hop on the computer and try and figure it out.

If you had it with Arista Premium with one lens, it is probably the lens, since Arista Premium (which is actually Kodak Tri-X) has never given me this problem (all my lenses are modern lenses). Still, the Foma films in 35mm do exhibit the highlight blooming even with modern lenses.

Just looked through a lot of my Foma 400 and don't see this problem
