Kansas. OMG. Kansas.
There is this German camera auction site, here, with lots and lots of Leica (and other) goodies. I am trying to figure out how it works. Specifically, I am not quite getting the "hammer" price listed after each item. Has anyone got any experience bidding there?

The Estimate is, well, what the "experts" estimate the item will go for.
The Start price is the start price.
The Hammer price is the full amount that the item sold for. If "excl. Premium" is included, the extra taxes/assorted fees incurred are not included in the stated Hammer price.

Never bought there, but sure wish that I had enough money to buy one of those nice 60's-ish 35/1.4s...

I think it would be neat if the hammer price was the same as BIN, but if this is an auction house, wouldn't it preclude higher profits through "bidding wars"?

If the hammer price is the amt the item sold for, then are we looking at auctions that have ended? I thought I saw the hammer price listed even for items in the Current section...

Fascinating.... I am still confused about that price though...

Just found this explanation in their FAQ:

"„Hammer Price“ is the final selling price when the auctioneer “hammers down the lot”. „Hammer Price incl. Premium“ is the final selling price including the commission."

So it seems I've been looking at closed sales - and - there is not an open auction right now 🙁

Hammer price is what the item brings in a real auction! Have you attended any auctions?
Normally the auctioneer has a hammer that he uses when final bid is established, used as in "Thump"!! slam the hammer to announce the final bid!!

Get it??

BTW...cheap hammer prices!!!

Kiu, I've been to auctions but what confused me about this site was the fact that the hammer price was listed for items in a "current" auction, i.e. one that apparently was still ongoing.

Some of their "sold" prices are pretty nice, I must agree.

Frankly, I'll stick to KEH for used items. They have a warranty, and that's better than a low price. Only problem with theirs: it's only for 90 days.

Used items purchased in Central Camera in Chicago carry a one-year warranty, though. They're pricey too, but the warranty is worth it.

BTW, thanks for the hammerpreis explanation! 🙂

This auction, a very well known one form a renowned company (Westlicht) is a great indication of going prices.

At this particular auction the dropping prices are continued, if you look at the last auction, the one before that etc. you are able to spot the going trend, and this is definitely downward for non collectibles that is.

Quite a lot of people were interested in the outcome of this particular auction since it's the first since the introduction of the M8. You will also see that most european dealers will slowly adapt their prices, either up (faster) or down.

Yes this auction is a well known here in Vienna. The auction has already ended (18.11.06) and if I get it right, the auctions are half-anual. Hammerprice, should be clear now.
