is the focus throw long enough to hit specific distances between 5m and 1m? it might take some practice, but intermediate markings may not be especially necessary.
Funny, I also feel that the M9/240 is the logical upgrade path to the xpro1. It's almost as if Fuji is subconsciously grooming future Digital M users with their fantastic X line.
It's a real shame that they have dropped the rectangular hoods. It was a real touch of class.
I downgraded from the M9 to the X-Pro1...so happy I did. The X-Pro1 is the more versatile tool and is obviously cheaper.

Ditto. Though I'd call it 'side-grading,'

A quick update, I will post pictures tomorrow.
After giving this lens a second chance today I came up with a refinement of some of what I said before.
Lens size: Yes it is big but its not a deal breaker for me. You are getting a pretty decent package, and it does fit ok in the camera bag without being overly greedy on space.
Hood: "Forgot" it at home.
Price: I think it still seems a bit much but then again the competition costs even more (looking at you Sony/Zeiss 24 f1.8) and you are getting a 1.4 so....yeah I guess I could come around on this point.
Image quality: The corners are not perfect, simple on screen viewing shows that they are not as tack sharp as the middle. Not really a revelation though. *sarcasm on* A big aperture wide angle lens that is not 100% perfect across the field? Who would have thought? *sarcasm off* Also I was able to get the lens to give me a bit of veiling flare in a tricky back lighting situation, will post that picture tomorrow, but honestly it was pushing the limits and it was the only pic I had with flare.
Personal opinion: I would not buy this lens, but I would recommend it. This is just a personal thing because I don't get along well with 35mm lenses. I am a 21-28-50 sort of chap so it is what it is. For anyone else who is into high speed 35mm lenses....look no further.
Keep in mind that my opinions are only based on two partial days of use so grain of salt and all that.

Finally a few test shots, a day late, someone decided to help himself to my car's brakes on the freeway and I get to take the bus for 2 weeks while waiting for my poor car to get a new rear end.
Nothing much to see here, just a couple snaps around town with a little tweaking in Lightroom. Note the flaring in the fourth photo.

My poor 2012 car. I have never had an accident or scratch driving in America, but here, every month I get something new on my poor car and its white which means everything shows up. Yesterday on the freeway someone decided that their car must be able to pass through matter because they went right into the back of mine. I have often wondered if Chinese drivers understood that when there is something solid, you cannot pass through it be you driving or walking. It is quite perplexing, especially when I see road accidents where someone has tried to drive through a barricade sideways or turn and drive over the sidewalk and into a wall.
Anyway, no car for two weeks. Its a holiday too, was supposed to go on a trip tomorrow where I was going to flex my new Fuji's muscles. Not happening anymore.

bloody hell mate, it sounds scary... maybe scarier than Greece where I spent my holidays visiting family. I still have this visual image of my brother in law in his truck (he's a veggie producer and I decided to accompany him to the farmers' market one day)
Anyway I was sitting next to him while he was doing 130km/h on the freeway (speed limit for trucks is 100), the seat belt buckled in but behind his back so the car wouldnt beep (
) talking on his mobile which was wedged between his shoulder and his chin, and at the same time rolling a cigarette
so angry I didnt have my camera at the time...
funny thing is, he's been driving for nearly 40 years and never been in an accident, go figure.

Indeed - looks like a little veiling flare around the highlights... I must admit i like that trait.

Much better than having glowing spots across the image!
I would say its very Zeiss like in its flare as my Zeiss lenses typically flare like this as well rather than the ugly alternative.

Nuts!
I once saw a guy here driving his Nissan SUV which was a manual, with his dog on his lap, his left arm around the dog holding it and his left hand on the wheel, and his right hand holding his phone up to his ear....in traffic. It was a WTF moment if there ever was one.
I also once saw a VW Bora driving down the freeway going the wrong way at speed. Later on I saw on the news that the very same car I saw hit a wall under a bridge and the camera footage showed he swerved to avoid...of all things....a plastic bag on the road. He swerved, lost control and ended up going ass first into the wall and his car looked like an accordion right to the driver cell. Lucky idiot.

Yeah.. Been in Beijing on several business trips. I know what u mean..l won't drive in China. Even my friends from Hong Kong did not thing it was that it was as bad as I told them until they did their first visit there.
They make a three lane highway into 5 lanes and they use the right emergency lane for bicycles and pedestrians. From my perspective, it like try have perfected the art of playing chicken their. My friends in Beijing just laugh and say I should try renting a car there, when I told them that. They have all spent time in the US on assignment.
Good thing your ok. Cars can be replaced.

I still wish they release the 23/2 in their X100 and X100S as a separate X lens.
In manual version would be great too.
That 23/2 renders beautifully imho and it's tiny, perfect for X-E1

Agreed. Fuji need to bring a 23mm pancake like design to the X mount cameras as well for those who want a small daily package. I also secretly in the back of my head want Sigma to bring out their Art lenses for X mount....

I agree... but in the mean time the X100s isn't that much more cash than the 23mm 1.4, so I went that route. The 40mm pancake is a good lens though, so I use that as my "35mm" equiv for the X-Pro1. Those Sigma lenses (and the prices) would be very welcome.

Whoever (Fuji, Voigtlander, Sigma...), but please bring a small 35mm FOV equivalent
with high quality and optical magic. Manual or AF.
The 23/2 in X100/s is like that... small, accurate, lovely OOF, notably 3D-like, lots of magic.
From the pictures I've seen so far, the 23/2 on the X100/s is much more accurate and special than the new 27/2.8 pancake

I think, if the system gets enough support from the market and is allowed to mature, eventually there will be a 2nd and maybe 3rd offering in the 35mm fov which is quite possibly the most popular one. All mature systems offer multiple options in this focal length. We also need a "diiferent" 50mm equivalent, maybe a slower/smaller one, and/or a monstrous f1. For now fuji has bigger holes to fill in the lens line up (mostly in the teles) so give it time... in the meantime we take our pick between this lens, the 27mm pancake, the SLR Magic 23/1.7 or even the x100(s) instead of just a lens. Not bad.
Personally I'd like to see somer Voigtlander lenses in native fuji x mount.

Gotta remember the x100 lens unit is actually a lot bigger than it looks - it goes into the body of the camera a fair way.

^ true, I dont think it would work on this mount (or sensor, I believe the x100 sensor/lens are optimised for each other)

even if that were true...the 27 is pretty good in it's own right!!
