No, I doubt he knew I or many others even existed. I also think I may have had viewpoints that might not have fit a lot of things he wanted to say. Being there four years and at that time being able to understand and speak a lot of the language gave me perspectives many people didn't have.
And I don't mean to put his series down. I thought for the most part it was well done. But I also think in many ways he understood Vietnam from the same perspective many US servicemen did, with only one year there, and a distrust of most Vietnamese. I also spent 3 of my 4 years in combat Brigades, albeit not in actual combat units such as infantry, artillery, rangers, etc.

I am back to post few shots from my very first trip in Vietnam in 2011. I should really go back again! Wish everyone happy new year!

Tim Zhou - great photos as always. I particularly like #2 and #4. To me, #2 gives a better juxtaposition of the tourists in the background, with the young lady in the foreground. And she is intriguing as I don't know if she just wants to take a break, is sad, or only trying to look good for the camera.
#4, simple as it might be, is well composed and beautifully lighted. When I was in stationed in Saigon, driving from Cho Lon (Nga Sau) to where I worked on Red Cross street, I would always pass a lot of older people in a park and in the large medium, who were practicing Tai Chi.

Those barbers are no longer available, instead of this below, simple stall outdoor:

Yes, we had barbers in small stalls or small shops as well, but barbers on motorcycles or bicycles, were a new experience for me and many other GIs.
Some of them acted as dentists for simple work like extractions, as well as other minor work.

I'll be making my first trip there this year, 4 quick nights in early December while I'm on my way to my next duty station, back in Korea. Very excited, I've been wanting to visit Vietnam for years.

I am sure you will enjoy it. December is good time to visit Hanoi. November would be the best.
