Happy Birthday INTERNET - 20 yo TODAY

Yes, but let us not forget that CompuServe, the consumer on-line service began in 1969 and was already quite popular when the first internet message was sent. (and it failed)

Also ARPANET, the US Dept. of Defense network, also began in 1969. It used packet switching technology like the internet and lacked only the www lookup database.

I had a CompuServe account pre-internet and also used ARPANET.

While the internet has changed much of the world, its technology was simply another evolutionary step.

What a Coinkydink....???

What a Coinkydink....???

I turned 70 yesterday... that means I have been using the internet since I was age 50 and one day. Or, I have been an internet user for 19 years and 364 days, Or... oh well. I'm sure I used the internet on the first day, because at the time I was working on computers at Microsphere Computers in Bend Oregon, building, repairing and selling. Started there in October of 1992.

Time flies when your wasting time on the internet. Particularly if someone is paying you to do something else for them.

Ah yes... compuserve... 300 baud rate, and that very advanced telephone cradle modem.

20 years ago when I would visit New York, I would first get a copy of Shutterbug, and sift through the ads. I would then copy the names and addresses of all the camera stores on a piece of paper, and fold it and stick it in my back pocket. I would take a few days to work my way down the list, and until I'd visited them all. The paper would get pretty ratty at this point. My favorites were places like Olden camera, and Lens and Repro company, because the had lots of weird junk. I Mostly couldn't afford to buy anything though.
Now I live in New York, and I can spend a few days on eBay buying weird junk, without even stepping outside.

Actually it was the web that came into being twenty years ago. We had email, archie, bitnet, ftp and usenet before that. And at the time, we thought it was the internet. How little we didn't know.

Yep, it was the WWW. The Internet had been in place decades before that.

The movies have been around since 1977, when the first Star Wars came out. 😉

Oh! And music's almost 30 years old, when the first CD was sold to the public.

Amen to this - the Web is 20 yrs old.
Bitnet was IBM's internet if I remember correctly
Arpanet was the progenitor of the Internet
We used both for academic email in the 1980's

300 baud acoustic modems were charming, slowly watching character by character paint on the "terminal"
