He's 91 today, so a good time to take out that copy of "The Americans" you have (right?) and take another look at a monumental project and result.

I so totally agree. Both "Story lines" and "The lines of my hand", and actually a few more of Frank's books, are much more fascinating to me than "The Americans". A true master, in any case.

The true mark of an artist is that their work retains its power through time. The Americans is the photography book that leaves all other photography books behind and reaches a whole new level of sophistication and intelligence.

Robert frank actually cared for people, and it shows in his photos. He give up on all photography rules and conventions of what a good photo should look like and reached directly to the true essence of his subjects.

In my personal opinion, the three photographers who's work is simply unassailable are Robert Frank, W. Eugene Smith and Sebastiao Salgado.
