I just installed Ubuntu 8.04, which I really enjoy using after reconfiguring its interface to my liking, but now comes the hard part: how well does it play with VueScan? I tried 8.04 32-bit with SANE and xscan, and thought, forget it! Not worth the trouble.

I have an Epson 4490.

i can only comment for 32bit ubuntu -- that works flawlessly.
maybe you should contact ed hamrick?

just attempting to compile a 64bit version should not be too much effort, though some tweaking may still be necessary (which can take time). anyway, 64bit versions will be required soon.

I'm at the stage where I could almost go completely Linux. I do all my scanning in Vuescan and all my processing in Lightzone, both under Windows currently. My PC is old and horrible, and I dream of replacing it one day. If I do, perhaps it will be for a Linux box!

i found GIMP processing only 8bit color depth a bit limiting sometimes, and maybe the lack of colour profiling may also be an issue. but beside that, i'm a happy linuxer.
