Hasselblad 40mm Distagon

Quite the beast, but what a hoot to shoot!
I picked this lens up yesterday at a small Toronto RFF meeting. Trius brought this lens, which I bought from our own David M., up from the States to save on shipping. After some fine food and discussion, we went our separate ways and I shot a roll of hp5 along the Toronto waterfront at Sunnyside pavilion, for those familiar with the location.
I hope to develop the film today and will scan some frames to share here. Just wanted to share my excitement over using this optic.

I have that one, too. It's a good optic, I have found. The giant dedicated hard rubber lenshood they made for it may be a useful addition for you in certain situations.

Thanks Dan. I took several shots with the sun in the frame. I wanted to really challenge this lens.

I'll find out soon enough for myself, but is there much/any vignetting with this optic?


Now to find the perfect bag to carry this combo.

Hi frank,
None I have ever experienced. I prefer it to the Superwide SWC/M, because it is reflex viewing, and also the costs involved. It is truly a beast. Use a fast shutter speed (1/250 or faster when hand-holding), or a heavy tripod, due to the size and weight of this lens. I have lost some overall sharpness before, handholding at 1/125. It is a hoot to use!

I have the same lens in Rolleiflex SL66 mount. Lovely, but at my age is getting heavy. The rubber lens hood plus a couple of filters makes huge addition to the backpack.

If you get a sharp version, this lens is killer. I miss mine quite a bit. Good luck finding filters for it. The hood is a great addition and I highly recommend it. The Cokin X-series Pro filters work with this lens. I used to have an orange one and you can rig it to mount to your hood with some creativity.

The Distagon 40 is a great performer - but it is big and heavy!
That's the reason why I want to sell mine now, and because I bought an SWC for a good price recently.

Did you mean to say Distagon? The Biogon is designed to be rather close to the film which is why it's only for non-SLR cameras.

Of course I meant the Distagon, sorry. I thought about the Biogon of the SWC and made this mistake. Thanks for your hint.

I had the SL66 version too. It and my 120 S Planar were my most used lenses. I shot with it for nearly 30 years. I also used the Hasselblad. Version for a few years. It's a very fine lens and much easier to use for critical work VS the SWC. I'm ow using the Hasselblad CF FLE 40 but in all honesty there's not much if any difference until you get really close with it.

I also have the 40mm Distagon, CF FLE version, and the SWC/M CF. I like both, but the great thing about the 40mm is that you can see what you are doing on the groundglass! In theory the Biogon should be better, but I have not, so far, found anything wrong with the Distagon.

This lens looks very large and heavy. It is a different feel with the SWC.
