Isn't the 907X just...a repackaged X1D with the viewfinder removed? I must be dumb but really can't see it doing anything the X1D couldn't.

Except that you can now hold it in the uncomfortable way.

The back has most of the smarts in it. The 907X body is basically a lens mount and a back holder, connecting the two main components.

Some of us prefer the way you hold a classic Hasselblad with waist level finder vs an eye level camera... It presents a different point of view and is not at all uncomfortable to my hands. 😀

Well the X1D v1 easily equals 810 color film, something I don't say lightly having shot 810 for twenty five years (I'm not alone in this opinion). I've left most analog MF and all LF behind. The X1D fits in a A&A ACAM 7100 bag with a Leica. Zero contest, unless one needs to use some expired or soon to be discontinued film...

Twenty years and many still can't see difference between digital and film. It was, is nothing but pixels for those many and twenty years.

The Lomo has a focus lever. Hundreds of lenses? For what? Who does that?
I think real mf size of the 120 film for real mf rendering is much more important than that dinky little rectangle sensor, no matter how many pixels it has. What is it, 42x36? Vs 58x58 of film? Should really be called mini medium format. mmf. or micro mini medium format. mmmf.

Huss, just looking at the general appeal of the Sony mirrorless offerings as platforms for all manner of lenses makes me see the potential for all kinds of lenses on the 907. The X1D itself is quite capable of using lots of lenses from all manner of makers (via adapters obviously).

I’d never think anyone should stop shooting MF film, but to say MF film is equal or better to these MF sensors for any measure of rendering is not something I can agree with. One could likely get close with some ADOX CMS, but comparing even a 16x20 from 810 film to images spit out by the X1D clearly changed the game for me, who long thought that I’d be shooting glass plates and printing on hand coated paper before giving up 810.

Very fair points Bob, and of course I was stirring the pot somewhat.
What I do genuinely find disappointing is no-one has yet matched the square film ratio. I would much prefer a 24-36mp 60x60 sensor (or thereabouts) to a 50-100mp 45x36 sensor.

I agree that there is a subgroup of photographers that like to use old manual focus lenses on modern digital cameras. I get that it is neat that you can use them and they are cheap, but I have not been won over by focus peaking and magnification as focusing aids. They feel unnatural and kludgy to me. Focusing shouldn't be such a rigamarole. Perhaps the new EVFs like on the Lumix S1/S1R are the needed improvement.

Big fan of the square as well. The native square files from the X1D are stunning, and the camera makes it easy to compose either in the VF or on the rear screen. True, none of these shoots at the whole 120 frame size, but I haven't see that as a problem (especially if the lenses continue to get faster). I've not run into problems with too much DOF often, certainly not as often as I did with too little on even MF film, let alone the 810.

We all have our needs - both aesthetic and physical - and I continue to be surprised at how well the X1D fills mine.
