Today begins a, hopefully, long running thread as I shoot the new-to-me, 503cxi.

Since I live in The Deep South, I may as well share my Hassy experiences. So, I am headed south of Atlanta to my grandparents' old farm in Talbot County. I am researching deeds today. Next week, I shall have my cousin (85) and his wife along with my sister and brother in law (both 80) along to visit where they were born or grew up in the 1930s and 40s.
Today, however, I will stop by the Agriculture Museum in Woodland where they had the annual Hog Killing workshop last month:

http://www.oldsouthfarm.com/gallery7.htm

I have heard about that since I was a child as my father used to get his meat for the family at the same kind of event each Spring before hot weather. The Hassy will be a treat to shoot as today is warm, sunny and perfect!

Of course, it will be a few days before I can post images and the stories behind them.

In the meantime, does anyone else have Deep South Hassy images to share?

This sounds like a wonderful project and adventure. Safe travels.

What are your plans for developing, scanning and printing?

Thanks, I can't tell you how long it has been since I have been inspired to do a fun project!

When I get back, since I am shooting Portra 400 today, I will drop the film off at my buddy's local lab for developing and scanning. I may have it back tomorrow or Friday. Maybe over the weekend, I will have some images to share.

Being new and coming from 35mm, I am not up to speed on the best workflow quite yet but it is doable. I am looking forward to discovering how to work with the "magic square" format!:)

Oh..printing... hmmm, that is a whole different thought. Glad you mentioned it so I can think about it while driving today.

Finally, made it back home before dark-thirty. It will be a few days before I develop and scan my last roll of Portra 400. On my way back, I managed to drop by the Agricultural Museum but no one was in. It was locked up and quiet as a church. Not a soul in sight.

So, I wandered around looking at some interesting equipment, snapped a photo with the X1 and then a couple of frames from the 503.

Please pardon the non-Hassy image below.

Here is one of the X1 images without, regrettably, any signs advertising the recent "Hog Killing". I have no idea what is inside the building...yet.

This photo will be for comparison with the Hassy images I will post soon.

I started shooting medium format with a Mamiya C220... and, like you, coming from 35mm, the square format took some time to get used to. It wasn't until I started thinking about visualizing my shots as if they were CD covers that I came to enjoy "seeing" images before placing my eyes above the waist finder of the camera.

Hence... think about your images and their design as if they were to be CD or (in our case I'm sure you'll understand) vynil LP sleeve cover photographs! :)

Now... something to look forward to: a Hassy's adventures in the deep south.

I wish you a very successful and fun project, Dave.

Beautiful reminders of your city, Raid, thanks! Your daughters and our previous trips to the waterfront with you remain find memories.:)

The SWC has a really nice look to the images and it does a great job in your hands. Do you shoot it much?

You posted image looks great.

Thank you Dave.
I use the SWC during travel mostly. Digital cameras are in the end less costly to use than medium form film cameras. The camera sits there, ready for any special events.

Thanks, Raid, hopefully, we will make it down to Destin in May. Looking forward to seeing you again.

Here is another from the focusing test walkabout:

It was a dark and stormy morning...

Enjoy Dave. I decided to get rid of my 503 after I couldn't manage to get a decent diopter for the thing that let me focus and meter. That and the weight compared to the rollei's made me keep them instead. But the 503 is a wonderful camera in the hand or on the tripod. I shot a 500/C for years, traded the kit for some F4s bodies when they were able to make me more money. Returned with a 503 CW for a while. My recent need to simplify/condense made it one too many. I've kept the SWC/M, but keep lurking on eBay after 503s...

Shoot well sir!

Dave, sorry I haven't sent you pics of the screens and finder yet, we've had power outages here in Michigan for the last 2 days. The reply before mine from Bob reminds me of an issue with the PME finder. The image on the screen is in focus but the EV numbers are not. It is fairly bad too, I have to stop looking at the screen and change the focus of my eye to bring the EV numbers a little into focus. It sounds like this is the issue Bob had also and that he was unable to change it even with diopters. I assume that changing the diopter might bring the numbers into focus at the expense of a properly focused image on the screen. You might want to consider this. I will still try to get some pics to you maybe tomorrow. Thanks, Bob in Michigan.

Thanks, Bob... :)Can't wait to get my sea legs under me. The weather is perfect around these parts and hoping for some fun outings. Covered bridges, old mills, mountains, beach, all of it! I have a studio shoot set up for next month and after that, much more.

Other than the synchronization issues between lens and body and body and back it is a very intuitive camera, aided by a magnificently clear exposure readout right there on every lens. You will soon be a duck in water I'm sure. For me, regular use is a key means of avoiding woe.;)

I was unable to get anything easily in focus (to my eye) with either of the PME finders I tried, and the dearth of new in box diopters was maddening. I had several which were clearly wrong, making things worse or not doing anything. Similar to the screens, where someone would get a new screen or diopter and put the old one in that box to keep it safe, but not mark it as not being a -1.5 or not being the Acute Matte. Hasselblad was not terribly helpful with such "ancient" equipment to my dismay.

I do keep lurking/lusting after them in eBay tho...

Hey. No problem, I completely understand. Too many projects around here but I am making progress. This medium format venture is coming together quickly and totally unexpected. My priority is a decent screen, then extension tube for the 80.

Somewhere along the line someone needs to assure me that Flickr is secure before I sign up in order to post decent photos. And then there is the scanner... That has to wait until June.:)

Do your research on how to ID the screen you are after, and be sure to have return privileges when buying. Too many mis-identified Hassy parts out there.

I scan from prints :)

Should be a good thread, yesterday I received my new to me matching chrome
waist level finder for my Hasselblad 500CM I had a black chrome on it and I finally
found one at the price and condition I wanted (besides there really hard to find)
enjoy using your Hasselblad.

Here is another image with the old focusing screen that surprisingly was ok at infinity. I was just trying out the camera so I did not have a tripod, nor was the foliage at peak, so, it is just a preview of my field trip in a week or so. I expect full bloom of the mimosas soon and a good foliage cover and I will shoot with a long exposure to smooth out the water flow.

A crop works pretty well, too:
