Hasselblad in The Deep South

Should be a good thread, yesterday I received my new to me matching chrome
waist level finder for my Hasselblad 500CM I had a black chrome on it and I finally
found one at the price and condition I wanted (besides there really hard to find)
enjoy using your Hasselblad.

Sounds good! Thinking I would like a nice chrome one, too.😀

Again, using the old focusing screen but scale focusing to check and sure enough, it was almost close enough for a sharp image.

Wow the pictures are great, love that red.

Thanks, it does catch your attention doesn't it? I have been photographing that mill for two decades and it is a color that changes constantly with the time of day and environmental conditions. It is a great place to be in the fog of early morning.

The old water wheel has long since been gone. It was a lovely sight to behold but the old building is well-maintained now by the County. Barring another hurricane like that I remember twenty years ago that flooded the stream and brought the water level up to the bottom of the door, the building should be there a long time for future generations.

I was unable to get anything easily in focus (to my eye) with either of the PME finders I tried, and the dearth of new in box diopters was maddening. I had several which were clearly wrong, making things worse or not doing anything. Similar to the screens, where someone would get a new screen or diopter and put the old one in that box to keep it safe, but not mark it as not being a -1.5 or not being the Acute Matte. Hasselblad was not terribly helpful with such "ancient" equipment to my dismay.

I do keep lurking/lusting after them in eBay tho...
Bob, I can appreciate you being frustrated and Nanthor being honest with Dave about getting proper focus with the PME Finders. With my finder; it was made to "fit" for my eye's in the store when they popped the -2D diopter on front for me. All focusing is very quick and sharp with all my lenses; plus the EV lites up equally sharp inside. I might add to this also that I have 20/20 with my most recent eye Dr. exam. It will take time for Dave to get use to one.

Do your research on how to ID the screen you are after, and be sure to have return privileges when buying. Too many mis-identified Hassy parts out there.

I scan from prints 🙂
I commented about this same item in Dave's other thread very strongly; but the best bet would be to go to a big store that has stock to get it done right the 1st time. I can now understand why some guys get fed up trying to get the focusing just right by dealing with E-Bayers long distance and sell their Hasselblad equipment. Service has really dropped off since small stores are closing all over North America and the expertise with it.

Here is another image with the old focusing screen that surprisingly was ok at infinity. I was just trying out the camera so I did not have a tripod, nor was the foliage at peak, so, it is just a preview of my field trip in a week or so. I expect full bloom of the mimosas soon and a good foliage cover and I will shoot with a long exposure to smooth out the water flow.

A crop works pretty well, too:

Looks very familiar 😉

So the screen is a problem then? If I recall the couple frames I shot your camera, it seems changing focus did not result in a difference on the screen (or any that I could tell) Sure was bright though.

Joe, your are correct... bright but that was exactly the problem....the screen was for a different purpose, I am told and did not fit the camera at all but I was able to somewhat get close with scale focus guesses.

The "new" screen they gave me is ok..not great at all, but I can shoot with it but I really want a proper screen. Maxwell has great screens! But funds are limited...so I continue my search for the next week or so.

You and I need to go back to the mill in a week or so... the warm weather is really making things pop quickly!😀

So far, I am more comfortable with the 503 and if I can get the screen issue solved, I can begin to work without thinking of the camera.

I can see the potential, I just need to get on with it! More to come as this adventure unfolds.

Loving the Hassy!

Now, just finishing off the rolls shot on a walkabout checking the focus of the new old screen. Handheld snaps, nothing more or less.

The 503cxi is feeling very natural in my hand and the square seems normal, as opposed to limiting, so the next roll, I will continue to explore the mystery of the square format and may even try a macro or two, now that I have an extension tube in the mail to me. Thanks, Bob!

Off the Newnan square in an alley, it is garbage pickup day:

Thanks, Bob, I have more but too tired from working in the rose garden.

I planned on going up to the square today but the rain started as I was getting set to go. Looks like two days of rainy weather, after that, I will take the tripod up and see how it goes. Maybe even a long exposure at the mill.

After that, I need my own scanner to assure I get it done with my own preferences. And of course, I will work around the small image posting with Google or Flickr. The best is yet to come.

From the first roll with the bad focus lens, I did manage to scale focus a decently sharp image and the black and white came out ok...can't wait to shoot the roll of TriX in my bag.🙂

Grandsons, same old silly pose...
