Hasselblad SWC is cool

Now to load it and make some SWCpix.

Onwards!

And the adventure begins!

How do you like the quality of the knockoff lens hood? I'm considering picking one up on Ebay as flare has been a problem and I can't find a good solution for mating the ProShade to the Series 7 (8?) filter system.

can't wait to see your results!

Which filter szie or lens hood size is needed? I have the chrome lens.

The SWC uses a drop-in filter system with a male-threaded retaining ring. It was known as 'Series 8'

It's close to 67mm, but the thread pitch is different, so don't try and screw in a 67mm filter.

With the exception of UV/Haze, the filters I've found are expensive. I'd love a set of Neutral Density filters, but they're upwards of $200 when you can find them.

With regards to the hood, there's a company called Cirrus Adapter on eBay which sells a 'For Hasselblad' C38 hood for about $40 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Lens-ho...956?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item58808ee324)

The genuine Hasselblad article commands about $250 on eBay, unfortunately: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hasselblad-...951?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4166f81677

The Bay 60 square hoods for later model SWC/M (if I'm not mistaken) are much more common and readily available at reasonable prices.

Genuine hoods are extremely expensive. There are non-genuine substitutes (eg ebay #380113969956) that work very well, and are also a perfect holder (as per the original) for the Hasselblad 63 threadless filters. I think the filter is equivalent to one of the Series filter sizes, possibly Series VIII. If you are lucky your lens still has the ring screwed in place on the front of the lens. That acts as a filter holder and also protects the thread that receives the hood.

EDIT: TRS got there first!

What they said.

I bought the hood and a clipon "hood cap" from seller "heavystar" on Ebay for $30 or so. It is nicely finished and fits perfectly, includes the Series VIII 63mm filter retaining slot.

I'd love to have a Hasselblad original SWC hood, but it's not worth paying nearly 6x that (or more!) for a decent condition used one. Same seller had a used Hasselblad orange filter available for $60, so I bought that too. It's most of what I use, but I'll order a B+W type 106 ND eventually too. That's about it for me. ;-)

+1.

I have a 10-stop ND in 77mm, and a bunch of step-up adapters. The adapters are in soft aluminium, and I can very carefully screw the 63>77 adapter into the front of the Hasselblad (SWC and Distagon 50) just far enough to grip lightly, without damaging the threads. Not ideal but it works and I know enough to not damage the thread. Certainly not recommended for the heavy-handed or for those with no sense of the properties of metal.

Raid: "Series" filters are different, if you haven't used them. Series 63, in your case. They have no threads and are dropped into the front of the lens and held by a retaining ring. Photo.net had a good picture and thread on this.

It's about the only reason I got the CF lens - most of my lenses are Bay 60 and I use a Bay 60 > 77mm adapter for filters. My filters are mostly 77mm, so they can be used on any camera. (Yes, a 77mm looks a little odd on a IIIf.)

I like using the shade mostly to protect the front element.

Zone focusing really is a breeze with the SWC and Hasselblad's integrated distance scale. I find I'm employing the same method with my rangefinder more and more, as well.

I'm traveling to Detroit, New Orleans, and Tampa over the next two weeks and I've decided to bring only the SWC, two 12 backs, and some Pan F 50. Shooting challenge!

And some more fuel for the fire:

One of the best pics I've ever seen on RFF. Frances summed it up in one word: Wow!

Get the original Hasselblad Hood, I have picked them up inexpensively. The original Hasselblad Series 8 Filters, too. I have found them in junk boxes at camera stores and bought things in "piles". These hoods and filters also fit the old black T* 50mm F4 Distagon, which I happen to own.

The replica hood I bought seems fine, but I'm curious.

I understand the C 50 hood for the Distagon 50mm lens is identical to the C 38 hood except that it is about 3mm deeper. Does anyone know if this additional depth would cause vignetting?

thanks!
G

Hmm. I happened upon a reference that said the Distagon 50 C lens hood was the same as the Biogon 38 C hood, just 3mm deeper. A quick search on Ebay brings up several available (for much less than the SWC hood).

I'm just curious as to whether the C 50 hood's additional 3mm depth would pose a problem. It's still $80 vs $25 for my aftermarket C 38 hood, but the finish looks nicer.

No hood.

Nice. I know this lens is pretty flare resistant.

I generally keep a hood on every lens primarily from the point of view of providing more protection for the lens against getting dinged while helping, whatever bit it might be, reduce flare. With the SWC, the other reason I keep the hood on is that it's the retainer for Series VIII filters—with B&W film I tend to have an orange filter on the lens a good bit of the time.

I just realized that my SWC came with a SWC lens hood! I never paid attention to it. The seller (Thanks!) included a 120 and a 220 back, plus a filter and a SWC hood in addition to the matte glass for viewing. I was told that these were not cheap.

I have used three 220 rolls so far, and one 120 roll for my trial rolls with the camera.

Two lens gallerys on boards are consistently better to me; those for the 21mm SA and the SWC.

Raid: Do you also have the filter retaining ring?

BTW: you can trim a Kodak Series 8 shade to the right dimensions, too. (Folks cut the 80mm shade - inexpensive/available - down to length for the 60mm lens, which shares the shade with the 38-60 shade - a poor solution for the 60). I'd just get the ebay copy, but it's interesting to check out some of the Series 8 bits you can use that are still available and inexpensive.

That's a sweet kit, although I think the 220 back would be wasted for me (none of the films I tend to use are available in 220 rolls). Mine came with caps, hand strap, and leather soft case. He also supplied the late-model Acute Matte focusing back at a very reasonable add-on price.

I had to obtain a back, lens hood, orange filter (should arrive tomorrow), tripod plate (should arrive tomorrow). I still need to pick a viewfinder to use with the back, should order an ND filter, and I ordered a longer neck strap as well (should arrive tomorrow). Eventually, I'll buy a second A12 back for it.

The original C 38 hoods are a darn pain to find and too expensive. Good thing there are well made aftermarket replacements. :-\

BTW, I have a spare leather hand strap if anyone needs/wants one. Very nice condition, it was from the 903SWC kit that I sold in 2004 (I found it in a box of miscellaneous straps and such just last night). $40 to anyone interested.

This thread has me dearly missing medium format. I used to shoot a lot with a 500c/m +80 cf, and a Mamiya 6 with all 3 lenses. The base density of B&W film was so much better in medium format that 35. There was always so much detail you could print from a 6x6 negative that just didn't exist in 35mm.
Some days I really miss film. I miss how deliberate and tactile it is. I especially miss the equipment like the SWX- it was all better.

I'm not sure I miss the darkroom very much. I worked as a darkroom assistant for a pro for 4 years to help pay my way through college. I got to be very good, but I also got completely burned out. I much prefer working on an image while watching the world outside my window to a dark room full of chemicals.

Thanks for the posts. Keep the images coming. They're beautiful.

Hasselblad /63 Filters to fit Superwide.

Hasselblad /63 Filters to fit Superwide.

If anybody is interested, here is the full set of Hasselblad/63 filters.
These fit the Superwide and the 50/60 Distagons.
You attach them with a retaining ring set, or a screw-in lenshood.

Green "G"
Yellow-Green "YG"
Red "R"
Orange "O"
Yellow "Y"
Neutral Density "ND" 64X

There is of course also the UV "0", keep those on lenses for protection.

I see a filter that is between the lens hood and the camera. How does the filter retaining look like?

A leather hand strap can come in handy. I have a neck strap.
Yes, my hood has on it C 38.

Look at the inside of the lens hood after taking it off the camera. Imagine a thin ring with a knurled edge using that same inside shape, threads on the outside, but no hood beyond that.

Well, if you'd like my extra hand strap, send me a PM and we'll work out the transaction. It is nice when you're shooting on the street ... helps you hold onto the camera without a strap flopping about. :)
