It happens that once in a while I am the lat person to post something in a thread. I check here and there for additional postings, but I seem to be the last one. What caused this event to happen? I am listing some possibilities:

1. My comment did not add anything to the thread and people got bored.
2. Everything that has to be said has been said.
3. Some people are out to get me and they decided not to post after me.
4. This happend due to "chance".
5. Other possibilities.

What is your feeling when it comes to your own posting being the last one in a thread? Do you believe in Option 4?

I've had two threads deleted that contained some of my best jokes. The person who starts a thread can kill it by using........well I won't say anymore. 😛

Is this thread dead?

I always think of the Monty Python skit "Confuse-a-Cat" in cases like this.

The thread is simply catatonic and requires a really stupid post to un-catatonicize it.

Did this work?

I recall killing 2 threads on a large video cam forum, and moving about 60. I never liked banning/nuking and warning people---because deep inside I was just like "them." 😎

Hey guys, I think this is the secret smiley face code that closes a thread:

I hate it when after a long discussion and some great entries, the thread creator just decides to delete the thread instead of requesting to lock it. I think deleting your own thread is one of the worst forum ettiquettes, unless there's some impending meltdown going on in it.

You can always create a new userid, and ask the same innane questions, and answer them yourself...I mean, as a different userid; it becomes very obvious to the rest of the forum. That could be a thread killer...

As someone who has created a thread, (a rather negative thread started in frustration and which invoked the "ignore list") and then deleted it once Isaw where it was going, I don't see the bad net ettiquetteness of doing so. I was even thanked by the moderator.

Just before Christmas, RFF was undergoing some really testy times and the slide needed to be stopped. I considered my deletion of a negative thread as a step in the right direction, and I would do so again if necessary. Hopefully I've learned to think a bit before beginning a negative thread and will not need to do so.

That has certainly happened before, and in those cases deleting the thread is better than locking it. Some of the posts in threads that I can remember have targeted specific members in very hurtful ways, and they were best deleted.

It's quite ironic isn't it. We always try to get the last word. But when it comes to internet forums, when you actually get the last word, and nobody responds to your rapier wit - we begin to second guess ourselves.

Quite true.

Just as in a real-life line/queue, I hate to stand the last in line. It probably implies that I chose the wrong line.

I must agree with Frank. If a thread goes south it should be deleted. I have been in this position before and I felt that deleting the thread was the only answer. It is better to do without certain information that to leave a negitive piece up for all to see.

Hmmmm...

I always figured if I was the last poster on a thread, that what I'd contributed was just SO profound that no further comment was necessary. 😉

Cheers,
Steve

Good to see that we're all in agreement with Frank (re: the thread deletion) if the thread has gone south et yadda cetera.

Try doing that while getting a visa at some very popular Consulate (just pick one); hours later, when you reach the bureaucrat behind the counter, she tells you that you should have been on the other line to get Form Impending Kafkaescality C-22; and we're closed in 15 minutes, so have a good day 😡

That kind of queue? I don't think that'll ever happen here!

Yep, I've killed a few. I took it personally for a while and then just figured what the heck, I can kill conversations in real life too, why should the internet be any different?

I decided to stay on-topic because I couldn't think up a good banana joke.
