Have you ever wanted something really badly then been disappointed when you got it?

Maybe less to do with disappointment Jan than just realising they won't get used ... for a couple of them at least. In the case of the M7 ... good camera but never used it and still not sure why. The GR1V ... can't come to terms with the 28mm focal length.

But I wanted them so badly when I bought them! 😛

Got it Keith. I've been there. I just didn't get the context of your thinking ;D

I have regretted buying a leica m8, 28mm elmarit,
Regret selling 35mm Lux Asph (got another now), M4-P, Super Angulon, Brassed Black Paint Nikon F with unmetered prism (the beast).....

Mamiya 7... As much as I love it, the long minimum focus keeps me from using it more. I really wish it could do 0.7 or 0.8m instead of 1.0.

I could also add a few fixed lens RFs, 120 folders and 35mm autofocus compacts to the list, but it would almost be unfair to those cameras. The real problem was that I thought I could find "The One" carry-everywhere camera. In reality, there's a time for the Olympus Epic and a time for a Minolta 7sii, and no need to restrict yourself to one camera forever. 🙂

I'd have to say every 90mm lens I've owned.
(tele-elmarit, hexanon, summicron, elmarit, etc.) Not sure why it took so long to figure out that 90mm is not for me.

Russian (FSU) 35mm rangefinders and lenses.

I spent time and money getting them shimmed etc. Time and aggrevation wasn't worth it. The only one I have now is a Jupiter 9 in LTM that seems to work really well, and is shimmed to focus properly wide open and up close at f/2. Only problem is that it is a fat lens that blocks a lot of the viewfinder on a Barnack Leica. Leica lenses or CV are really much better built, and perform better optically.

FED-1 (non-standard lens register), FED-2 (tapering shutter), 35mm Jupiter (sine-wave pincushion distortion), 50mm Industar-50 (image was OK, but infinity lock kept hitting the lens mount on the FED-2), 135mm (couldn't indicate infinity properly on the rangefinder).

Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 - That's really, really ugly bokeh on this monster. Very soft wide open too.

Nikkor 35mm f/2.8 AIS - small, soft focus lens at all apertures.

Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 AI - flares very easily. Focal length is close to the 20mm f/3.5, which I prefer much more. The 20mm is immune to flare.

Nikkor 180mm f/2.8 ED AIS. Beautifully sharp lens, but it needs a tripod mount. It's big and heavy. For it's size, I may as well use the 300mm f/4 and step back a little. At least the 300 has a tripod collar on it.

Zeiss Super Ikonta C. For some reason, the image is not as sharp as the 6x6 Zeiss Super Ikontas. Both of my Cs are in need of servicing, so this may be changed in the future. The yellow wax paper finders are a turn-off too.

Zeiss contameters and proxars - why should I use this when I've got killer Nikon Macro lenses? What a waste of money.

Cokin filter system. Great idea in theory, big pain to actually try to use. Nowadays, I just carry the big polarizer, view through it for the correct rotation, then stick it in front of the lens to take the picture. Those mounting rings, etc., are a huge pain!

Warming and color correction filters - too much of a pain to use as well! I'd rather just live with the odd color cast, or try to correct it in software after scanning the film.

In terms of filter use, all my lenses have a protective UV filter (has saved the lenses a couple of times). I carry a polarizer and maybe a grad. Other filters are used only with B&W e.g. a yellow/orange/red. All of the other filters I bought I never use.

Ever-ready camera cases. Why bother?!

Almost regret the X1. It was an expensive splurge. On the one hand, I basically don't like shooting with it: slow AF, shutter lag. It's sort of frustrating.

On the other hand, I've taken some of my favorite shots with it. The lens wouldn't flare if you covered it in magnesium shavings and threw it in a fire.

On the gripping hand, the X100 is, well, a few months away.

Good question: my silver Summilux ASPH 35mm.

Why? I thought I was going to shoot at all times wide open. 🙂 Turns out I didn't; light was always too strong or too intense or too bright whenever I traveled... But I got used to it. I won't part with it either! 🙂

Nikkor 35mm f/2.8 AIS - small, soft focus lens at all apertures.

Agreed. I don't have affection for any of the AIS 35's, even though for years I shot Nikon exclusively, and 35 is absolutely my favorite FL. But my first chromes with the Summilux ASPH were a religious experience... and now I feel the same way about the Biogon-C.

That's were we part ways. Agreed that the 24/2.8 (I had the AIS) flares too easily, but it was one of the first lenses I fell in love with. Just love the FL and flare issues aside it's a fine performer.

The 180 could use a collar but I usually used mine handheld, and it remains one of my all time favorites.

Ever-ready camera cases. Why bother?!

No idea. I never have bothered. 😎

I was having a tough time thinking of what photo gear I now own that I was ever disappointed with...then I remembered the three Polaroid SX-70's sitting in the closet...
It's a good thing I didn't spend all that much getting them so they can just sit...
Oh, yeah...the Slik U-212 tripod from the early 80's... it was my first real tripod...I did use for a bit (the crank handle broke) but now it too sits in the closet...

TMax...that one hurts because I wanted it to work...

I was disappointed by the Contax T I got as the seller was a lying sack of #*&^ regarding the condition. Meter didn't work, ergo camera didn't fire.

All fixed, like it now 🙂

Other disappointments? Nikon 14-24mm 2.8, an unbelievable lens. Disappointment comes from the fact that I just didn't use it as much as planned. Same goes for the monster Contax 17-35mm N... just didn't use it enough.

Some kind of light leak, or timing problem, in the curtains on one of my "rain/trunk cameras", my Nikon EM.

OK, one more. Leica CM. Fantastic camera but the service shutdown by Leica soon after discontinuation led me to sell it. A forum member is enjoying it now, what a great compact.

That describes every Nikon AF-S lens when compared with it's AF-D predecessor. At least focus is always spot on with a Nikon.

I wish that were true... Case in point: 35mm/1.8 AF-S. When using the AF sensors it's always off on the D90. How far it's off differs depending on whether it came from infinity setting or from closest. With live view focusing it's sharp, so it's not that there's something amiss with the glass itself. My AF-D lenses focus fine, no trouble there.

Nikon 24mm f/2.8 AI. Its slightly too wide for me; I have a habit of putting people towards the corner of shots which doesn't work well. It also feels slightly soft, though I am happy with it in other shots. I think some of the exceedingly sharp lenses messed up my expectations. I'll probably sell it and try to pick up a 28mm AI/S lens instead.

Olympus XA. Turns out the XA4 was a better camera for me. The XA works fine but I'm coming to accept that I like either wide lenses, that work nicely in low light or that are really sharp. I have options that work better for me in all categories.

FED 2. After handling a screw mount Leica, it just feels too big for my hands. Any time I'm using it, I wish it were an IIIc. If only IIIcs curtains where in the same condition as the FED 2s.

Nikon FG. I really wanted a Nikon OM2n. It just doesn't compare. I don't really want to add another mount to my SLR shooting though and I'm not going to give up the F4s/D70s.

<sigh> I need to stop procrastinating and start selling what I'm not using.
