Have you ever wanted something really badly then been disappointed when you got it?

A film camera - what a waste of money and time!

Two years ago, I'd never used film in my life, only digital (my current camera is a Leica M8). Everyone kept telling I must try film, so I went to a great deal of trouble and expense to get a film camera: I decided on 6x6 medium format as I thought it'd complement my M8, but I wanted the camera to be small yet have all modern features (like the new Fuji folder), plus not spend too much (a modern Mamiya 6 or 7 was too expensive), so I bought and modified folding camera: a Certo Six: see http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=65609

Having used it twice, I've come to the conclusion that film is a total waste of time for me: I just don't get it. Perhaps it's because my only experience is with digital... As far as I'm concerned, digital is better in every way than film, and I can see no advantages to film whatsoever.

Film's slow - I want my images/prints NOW, not in days or weeks when I've forgotten what I'm trying to achieve! I have no control over the appearance of the images (unless I buy a darkroom - and I have no desire to mess around with chemicals for hours doing what I can achieve in minutes on a computer). I hate the look: grain sucks! And scanning: boring!

I have no complaints about the Certo Six camera though. I expected to have problems using such a "quaint" old-fashioned camera, especially as it has no light meter. Surprisingly, it took little time to get used to it. It's now just a dusty ornament (I haven't touched it for over a year), and I'll sell it when I get around to it...

On the plus side, at least I tried film, and can now let it rest in peace...

Nikon Coolpix 995.

I had the Coolpix 950, and it was a great camera, but only 2.3 Mpixels. So I spent over $800 that I didn't really have on the 995, and although it had more pixels, and a few new features, it wasn't near the camera that the 950 was. Still have both of them, but rarely use the 995 because it just won't cooperate, and I get over 50% lousy pictures from it because of some stupid thing the camera decides to do.

35mm. Lusted after Leica M's, now MF RF (Mamiya 7II, Fuji 690s) with their large negatives satisfy me. Don't let me play with LF, ever . . .

I'll 2nd, but redefine to the original term "miniature" in order to include present digital.

It's not that miniature is bad, but larger format images are just that much better. You get a bit spoiled. It's supermarket chuck vs a true Kansas City sirloin.

Nearly EVERY Leica item I had - M3, M6, Summicron 50 - several versions. Followed by Yashica Fixed lens cameras - Electros. Both seem to have a huge following, which made me really want them, - I even sold great Bessa R and Ultron 35 lens I started my RF adventures with (and since re-purchased again) ...... but for me - they all ended up being uncomfortable, poor quality items that needed either an expensive fix or CLA or went right to trash can. Now my only Leica is M5 and I like it a lot. Good thing for me there are other great cameras and lenses from Konica and Voigtlander/Zeiss ZM.
Similar story goes for watches - having tried several expensive (and I mean EXPENSIVE) mechanial watched, I stick with Citizen and Casio now - and they work PERFECT!

not to drag this in another direction -- but.... "Have you ever wanted something really badly then been disappointed when you got it? " sums up my marriage...

I'm single. I'd say I'm disappointed that I lost more on my house in the 5 years I've owned it than my down payment. By a large amount. Can't sell it, can't afford to keep it.

C'est La Vie.

But one thing I know, I'm not selling my Canon P, or my CL to play "catch a falling knife"...

And, I have yet to regret owning any camera I have bought. Well, maybe the two or three "handyman's specials" I bought from "The Auction Site"...

I had a Coolpix 885. Loved it, until I got the 7.2 Megapixel Sony DMC-V3. (Which I still use BTW)

70-200 f/4 L & the Naneau pro lima bag

The lens is awesome, its the sharpest zoom I have, and when I was a wildlife photographer, I didn't care that it was white. now that I shoot in public rather than in a forest. I cant get on with it as much, and low light and handheld are not a part of the len's strengths.

tried to make it less "out there" by tape.

but that was more of a change in shooting style rather than any shortcomings of the gear.

a big dissapointment is a naneu pro lima bag. it looks nice, and looks like it would make for the perfect day bag. its a bit bigger than my lowepro nova sholder bag, yet it can't hold half as much, the shape of the bag deformed, and the padded strap had to be replaced once, and the improved strap is falling apart far too quickly.

Good question: my silver Summilux ASPH 35mm.

Why? I thought I was going to shoot at all times wide open. 🙂 Turns out I didn't; light was always too strong or too intense or too bright whenever I traveled...

Nothing an ND filter can't solve. I usually carry an ND .9 (3 stops) and find it incredibly useful sometimes.

yes

yes

Using the 35 lux at my preferred apertures generally requires the 1/6000 and 1/8000 speeds of the M8. ND filter's are one solution, but not optical when filter flare can be an issue.

A little disappointed with the Questar 3.5" telescope I bought new, directly from the factory a few years ago. On the one hand it is indeed *all that* and a thing of beauty, form, and function but I still find myself using a refractor far more often when it comes time to look at the stars. So the disappointment is that I thought it would be my #1 and it's my #2 instead.

I'll make someone a good deal! 😉

Boy, sure there sure are a lot of dissapointments out there....... Sounds like a lot of unrealistic expectations to me, but to end this on a positive note..... I bought a Canon P recently..... and love it quite a bit and another keiv 4a to replace the one that was wearing out...... I like that much more than my old 4a.............. Best - kievman
