Hawaii for a week which lens?

I would also do 21/35/50/90. Of the 50s, probably the Cron unless you really want the speed of the Canon. It should be possible to keep the weight off your shoulders by carrying the spare lenses and a battery or two, etc., in a couple small belt pouches.

FWIW, my usual M travel kit is 21/28/50/90. I use them all. I don't live by the one lens philosophy, though it seems to work for others. I find it too restrictive, though there are times when I might predominantly use only one lens. But usually it's a combo of all four.

I was in Kauai once upon a time about 14 years ago... But it was for work and I was literally 'stuck' in the Marriott resort for almost a week. Didn't really see much other than going on a whale watching trip and doing some snorkeling (which was cool). I recall Lihue was pretty small and not that interesting. With more spare time, I'd definitely try to get out into nature, do some hikes, explore the shoreline, etc. The hike/trail suggested earlier looks to be amazing. Wish I knew about it back then, and had the time available...

Hi,

Put the 35 on the camera - as a sort of wide standard lens - and carry the 90mm for when you want to get details or faces.

Regards, David

I personally think 90mm is too long for Maui and Kauai but I don't know your style.

IMHO, 21-35-75 would be perfect for those two islands. Without a 75mm, I'd take the 21-35-50.

I'm curious to why you came to these conclusions. Not that I doubt them, I'm just interested.

Flew to Hawaii for work for almost three years straight. Experimented a bit with 28 and 50, but in the end, the 35mm shot everything I needed...environmental portraiture to landscapes, to street. Take the 35 and enjoy your trip.

Do you have a decent P&S if so take it instead of the Leica. Don't think too much about the camera and lens think about your Wife and the special moments you will have it is your 5th Anniversary. If it has to be the Leica take the 50mm cron it is not too short (flattering for your wife no wa distortion) and it is smaller than the teles (less to carry)

Have a nice trip and a happy anniversary celebration.

Now that you mention it, the 75 for me would probably be the perfect companion for the 21 and 35. I use the 90 Summicron, which is great, but sometimes a little "tight" as a direct next option from the 35.

Either 21/35/75 or 28/50/90 would be excellent three lens outfits, with the 21/35/75 my preference. I'll have to work on that 75.....LOL...

Funny enough I was playing with this idea as well. Bringing my X100T but I feel like IM really going to miss my Leica for a trip I dont imagine i'll be taking very often.

It's obviously a personal choice, but for me, 90mm seems too tight for Maui and Kauai landscapes, while a 75mm was just about perfect for those 2 islands. Same for Oahu. OTOH, the 90mm did come in handy on the Big Island.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations. I ended up taking the 21, 50 cron and the 90.

I did Oahu and Kauai for two weeks with only an x100 (35mm) and M2 (50mm cron). Perfect combination for hiking, helicopter rides, and walking around.

it's not really a proper experiment, now you should take the 35 and the other 50, go again and compare the results 🙂
