HCB online interview

IMHO, it's a terrible interview, it was interesting to here HCB comment on how important the sense of geometry was in his images though.

Todd, thanks for the heads-up. Yup, it's a marginal interview but still hearing Bresson comment himself is valuable no doubt. I teach Broadcast Journalism and this interview is very typical of what's out there these days. Doesn't mean its well done but at least it has Bresson captured speaking about his work. All said, I will be using the interview this fall in an arts survey class I teach when we get to the section about photojournalism as an art form. I appreciate the link.

Charlie Rose is an otherwise very intelligent interviewer, though you could not tell from this interview. A bit star-struck, I'd say.

LOL -- funny. Yes, this is a Charlie Rose I hadn't seen before, and HCB is being...polite (perhaps he also expected a better, "nonbasic" interview?). He becomes the interviewer at times. It's a good document, in any case.

How fascinating. I can see why some of us nonnative speakers come across as rude or nonperceptive; "we" mean to explain. "You" mean to be noncontrived and direct. I should not be surprised about how he's surprised (and embarassed) by Rose's praises. Obviously, two fellow men are having a conversation. It's like I'm watching my grandfather (rip) or uncles conversing. eerie.

I can see how he's been so easily quoted out of context. I had never seen HCB speak. Thanks again, Todd.

You're right, Gabriel. Bresson is obivously "leading" the conversation as we would expect any polite uncle would do. 🙂 But again, just hearing Bresson speak himself is worth the watch.

Funniest thing about this "anarchist" notion. I think nearly every Frenchman I've met would say the he was an anarchist, w/out, for the most part, being able to clearly define what that means, 'cause, well, you just know 🙂

He was, to me, evidently stumped by the insistence on this ("define anarchist"). The very act of defining "anarchist" by an anarchist would be illogical. Ask a mute to speak in clear terms so that a deaf may hear him and have the blind man see their interaction is...well, you know... 😉

That is an interesting observation.

From what I've seen of HCB in interviews, particularly the documentary on Robert Capa, he comes across as sensible, polite, reserved with a very dry wit that others mistake for rudeness. The Impassioned Eye is another source for HCB musings.

I don't envy him. He must get asked over and over again about how, why, when he takes a shot. Charlie Rose might as well have asked Michael Jordan, "at the Championship Game, how, why did you know to take that jump shot?" Those are questions that any person must get tired of answering. Whether it is HCB or Michael Jordan. Some things are simply a matter of an individual intuition, and incapable of definition.

Yet HCB politely kept trying to answer, to his credit. Like I said, Charlie Rose is normally quite a perceptive interviewer. But he seemed a bit too awed by HCB to do this interview effectively.
