I am gonna get flamed for this post! I heard someone ask Nachtwey once what kind of film he uses.... does it really matter? Using a Leica does not make you a good photographer nor does it make your photographs better. It doesn't matter who used a Leica. Very few professionals use one any more. They are beautiful cameras though, just so you guys know what side I am on.

sorry, but for me knowing that some photographers i like uses leica made me realize that i need it one. as simple as that. Do you imagen a Henry cartier Bresson or Nan Gonding using big canons? no, me nither. Thas why I understan that to be able to do a similiar job i need a similar equipment.

I can't believe these guys haven't been listed, but I am honored to submit thier names for your consideraton: Eugene Richards (still actively shooting) Robert Klein, Josef Koudleka, and W. Eugene Smith.

W. Eugene Smith, huh? Have you ever really read up about the man? I mean, c'mon, he used just about any camera that he thought would work for a certain job. In the 30's he used a Speed Graphic, then later worked with Zeiss equipment (Such as a Super Ikomat A and a Contax). He also used an Ikoflex and Rolleiflex (though he preferred the Ikoflex). To further expand on the list of cameras he used, I'll inlude the Olympus Pen F and the Minolta SRT series of SLRs. Did he ever use Leica? Yes... but not because of any inherent advantages of Leica cameras (other than the small size and portability, which the Contax shared as well).

In the end, I really have no problem with someone posting a question about those who used Leicas. But to try and say that photographers like Eugene Smith used Leicas isn't even half the story... because many of them used all kinds of cameras! I mean, you could name just about any successful photographer from the mid-20th century and say "they used a Leica... at least once!" Furthermore, to state that since these photographers used Leicas, and then conclude that this provenance shows the superiority of Leica cameras in many photographic situations is fairly ridiculous as well. I've used a Nikon F for street shooting without a problem. You'll find that in the streets, it really doesn't matter what camera you use. It's all in your head! Just look at my avatar, that photo was made around 1960 with a 4X5 Crown Graphic or Speed Graphic. Lastly, one needs to consider that before about 1960, the only fairly extensive camera systems which allowed for easy portability and fairly rapid use (in comparison) without frequent film changes were all rangefinders. So of course there will be a large number of photographers from this era who used them, as well as Contax and Nikon rangefinders.

They might have used small canon, or nikon or contax RF's tho. The use of a rangefinder is more critical than the use of a leica per se.

Well, there's a picture in the book "Larry Burrows Vietnam" published by Alfred A. Knopf with Larry Burrows sporting a chrome M3 with a wide angle lens and external VF, another chrome M3 with the 50mm DR-Summicron and external finder, and a chrome Nikon F Photomic FTn slung over the shoulder with what might be a 50mm f1.4 Nikkor. Anyway, just thought I'd throw this out there if you were still curious.
